I don't believe you can without opening. Everything is visual to tell the difference.

The easiest thing to look for is the gauge. v1's had a 600 psi gauge on the reg, v2 went to 300 psi. Also the purge on the reg v1 had a single large hole, the v2 has 4 smaller holes. Several other differences, but those are the 2 easiest to spot.

Actually you can tell the difference versions just by the box alone!

First Gen Mini's came in this case

As far as I know the next Mini's came in these black boxes which are basically glorified cardboard

The 2009 Mini's came in this white box which is the same as the other black one.

If you don't want to take it out of the box generally I would say this is the best way to tell which generation it is, you will not get a generation 1 in a cardboard box or vice versa. I wish they still had the hard plastic cases cause I think they were way nicer than the newer cardboard boxes but the markers inside are much better.

Hope it helped you out!

if its a 09 its a gen 2 poppet version 4 (best combo)

gen 2 minis have a pressure guage that only goes to 300 psi, gen 1s had a guage that goes to 600, the purge nut on the bottom of the reg on the gen 1s has 1 large hole, on gen 2s has 4 small ones, thats it from the outside

There were some Gen1's shipped in the early black carboard boxes.

So my marker came in last night and when i opened it felt like angels descending from the heavens. Well it wasn't quite like that but the marker feels great. Gased it up and broke it in. have not run paint through it yet since i had to work but playing some scenario tomorrow in a place i never played. hope all goes well. And yes get rid of the dang barrel plug

Safety first! Its what Danger Erin says.
The idea is to further promote the item from walkin round with the plug in. Also ideal for the new player who buys this as a starter gun.

Yea thats true but i havent been to a field that allows barrel plugs in a long time. Being a 2009 marker you would think they would keep up with most field regulations. But yes i do see your point and yes always safety first

its just retarded that they would even put that in there, idk what they were thinking, its just going to confuse people, id take a mini in a cheaper box with a barrel bag anyday over that

I dont see why fields dont allow them. Yeah you can shoot em out but the paint just breaks and the plug falls out. Sometimes i feel more comfortable with plugs around me then bags. The elasticy string on the bags gets worn and that looks like id just cover the ball in flight if shot off.
