pimpin it out

i just ordered a k&n cold air intake for my 96 dodge avenger, and i wanna know how much the horspower and torque would be boosted up. the engine is a 140 horsepower (same with torque) i4 and is pretty much a more consistent neon engine.

any idea on what the change will be? also, any thoughts on what i should get next? I want my baby to be a sleeper, so please, no retarded ricer add-ons

not more than a few horsepower. I wouldn't believe the "15-20hp!!!!" ads, it really will only add that much if 1) the stock air intake is sucking up hot engine compartment air, and the new one sucks in cold air from outside, as well as having a ram-air effect or 2) you've modified everything else and thus the stock intake is the bottleneck of the engine

You probably didn't gain a whole lot except for some extra under the hood noise.

Well, if you're gonna expect big gains, turbo is the only way you're gonna make respectable hp for that car. But, if cash if the issue, simple mods like I/H/E pulleys if ya like, bigger throttlebody, and maybe a 50 shot of laughing gas if you like. I don't know a lot about the 420A engine in your car. NA dsms have them, but I tend to stray away from em. SWATORNOT may be able to help you out more on this engine.

Ahh my ears are ringing....

Your not goign to see much more than about a 5hp to the wheel increase with a filter...with a CAI on you can expect about 7-9 possibly.

Now for a daily driver you may notice a better "pep" feel to it but if you start getting the itch to obtain more power from your motor...only way to do that is going turbo. Usually you can find used ones for under $2k, and a turbo kit for a Neon will work you just need to get different piping i think, the turbo manifolds should be identical for port and bolt up.

Now if your looking to save a bit of money and just build a little power out of it...go all motor...just dont push it too much. Do things like cams, head work, header, full exhaust work, Ignition doesnt really need to be messed with since stock the coil is good for about 30-35K volts which is plenty to run untill your feeding a the thing a bottle.

Just let me know what route if either one you plan to take and i am more than willing to help you out

oh, if u get a larger wheel (diameter) and lighter u may get some more hp to the wheels. Since they have less inertia to move. Saw it on speed, very interesting.

thats possible but the results are very very minimal its more for handling the power gain

One other thing i forgot to mention is if its a 5spd look into a PT crusier clutch..has more holding power and is a bit better than stock plus its fairly cheap. Also while your in there opt for a lighter fly wheel, this will allow you to rev quicker and have a bit more responce from the engine

first of all, i am replacing the intake system from entirely stock, so yes it is cold air intake as well as new high flow filter. I got it all for $60, and it looks a hell of a lot better than something id make myself, so i think its worth it.

but anywho, my friend is really car savvy and is gonna help me drop in a bigger motor this summer, so im not gonna be doing anything to my motor yet except maybe putting in some better spark plugs. im hoping i can find myself nice little v6 to throw in there, cause it'll help make the fart noise turn into a muscle car type noise

my friend it wont help...the 2.5 V6 is i believe the only option for a motor swap...unless you have a butt load of money to swap in all the other parts and make a new engin cradle for it.
the 2.5 is one .5l bigger than your urrent motor so i highly doubt the exhaust or power difference is even worth it. THe moeny your dumping into a new motor swap would be better spent on a Stage 1-2 turbo kit for it.

Well in all honesty unless you can get ahold of the 2.5 for little or nothing...have fun trying to make something else fit..

Trust me your much better off keeping it simple by going all motor on your curretn I4 or pulling out about 300+hp to the wheels by adding a turbo...

but i have given you all hte helpfull input i can on this...its up to you to make your final choice. and good luck with which ever you choose

bs, bigger wheels don't do anything except make you put down less hp. you should keep the same size, just lighter weight. if you go bigger, they'd have to be a helluvalot lighter than the same wheel that's just 1" smaller, to be the same weight.

and my advice is to save your money to get something that has a better aftermarket following and/or can be more easily modified

He has one of the most potential aftermarket motors...next to a honda which also has a very large aftermarket.

First place to look for a turbo kit is Hahnracecraft.com (think thats right) another option would be looking on like Dsmtuners.com or some other forum for used parts.

You can have a brand new turbo kit for just about $3k and that i believe is a stage 2 which is good for about 75-100 additional WHP, add a little extra boost or swap out internals and you can apply even more boost....

Yup, so cheap I just bought me another Fox Body mustang. Plus parts are a dime a dozen and if the motor goes, all you have to do is fork over $100 for another.

QFT...thats what im doing. The 350ci Chevy small block has so much potential, and its so universal so theres so many things you can do to squeeze power from it.

If you wanna keep the car you have and get some extra power, you can swap out the exhaust system. A new header (lol that just made me laugh ) and a catback system could add on some double didget ponies.

Not much you can do other than that, and a turbo, but then youd still only be pumping maybe 250-300hp tops. The chevy smallblock is stock at 240. Supercharge that, or get a stealthram intake like im gonna do, new exhaust, hotwires, high output plugs, high flow injectors, and you have a pretty strong car....and then theres still more you can do.

all you guys constantly have this in your head that buying a v-8 is so much better...yeah it can have loads of power over a 4 cylinder but why conform to what so many have already done...why not be different and build something up that not many have done...

Plus im sure this is the kids daily driver so its probably all he has for now and the money he would put into it would be well spent and probably earn a bit of respect once its done right..

Not trying to start the very old V-8 vs $ banger debate again just trying to point out not everybody wants a fricking V-8 under the hood when gas is over $1.50/gallon.....

I dont think it's conforming. I do it because it's so freaking cheap. But like you said, let's not start a money argument.

But I'd rather be driving my V-8s all day long at gas being a $1.50, beats the $2.09 I'm paying right now for diesel but my V-8s cant tow 15,000lb+.

I have nothing against I4's trust me. Im not trying to add to any fire, but all im saying is that theres all that power for really cheap, and Spud was just saying that he wanted some speed, so I'm just throwing in my 2 cents.

Hey at least we all are being respectful so far and not turning this into the flame fest! I really appreciate it guys!

True if he wants speed i am willing to bet he can hit 140-145 with that car as is now... unless the Avenger is governed... My eclipse wasnt and i could pull 146 out of here with a CAI...wasnt in no 2 miles or anything but up to about 120-130 it wasnt slow getting there.
