Ka-****ing-Boom

Since we invaded the chlorine pill thread....

Post pics/stories of your biggest expereience. Dont try any of the stuff listed.

Biggest thing I've seen was a couple gallons of ANFOS detonated.. Anfos is mostly ammonium nitrate (KNO3, salt peter, base for MANY explosives, such as gunpowder)..

Big boom

1/3-1/2 of a chlorine tablet
1-2 tablespoon(s) of alcohol
20 oz bottle w/ screw on cap

just a fun explosion, but i dont suggest being near it, it takes up to about 3-4 minutes to explode, so dont get bored with it and run up and kick it- that doesn't work out well

This is nowhere near a huge explosion, but illustrates why you shouldn't try things. Really. =)

Remember those little "snappers" that appear around the 4th of July?

When I was little and didn't know better, me and my friend had an idea to make a giant snap by unwinding a few boxes of them into a bag and then we were going to throw it off of something.

We get into the second or third box when the bag with all the crystals in it explodes. I figure static electricity or them all rubbing on each other did it. Point is that my hand stung a little and I couldn't hear for a good while and then it took a while more to hear at a normal level again.

It was scary thinking that I had gone and made myself deaf.

Textbook is wrong.. Saltpeter is used in Gunpowder. Probably another ****up in teh Anarchist cookbook that lead a ton of people to believe that its saltpeter. Like Saltpetre. I guess in canadia and europe they spell it "re" but Americans on the net have been doing it (or they did do it when I was an active poster at totse.com) and its all been traced back to the anarchist cookbokk.. Full of typos...

Anyways, Sodium Nitrate would be NaNO3, right? Maybe a coefficient somewhere. But I'm almost 100% positive Potassium Nitrate is KNO3.

Gunpowder:

KNO3, Charcoal, and sulfur. In that order. 75:15:10 was the old old formula

They are pretty similar... Probably interchangable in some cases.

loudest boom i ever encountered was when the natural gas compressor my dad was working on backfired. Omg, i thouhgt the world had ended, i hit the ground. It has 4 pistons that are nearly 2 ft wide each, and the muffler is about 25 feet tall, 8 ft. wide. Yea, loud..

look at a periodic table.. sodium is right above potassium.. they are very similar.. so it wouldn't even matter.. I dont think my chemistry text book written by real chemists would have been influenced by the anarchist cook book.

Maybe the Petre is latin based? Sorta like Cupric is an ion of Copper.
Seems possible to me. I also don't think they were using the cookbook as reference material. I'd hope not at least.

It is true that Sodium Nitrate and Potassium Nitrate are mostly interchangable. They can be substituted in most mixes. Sodium Nitrate (NaNO3) is usually called Nitrate of Soda, while KNO3 is usually called Nitrate of Potash. Nitrate of Urea is for Ammonium Nitrate (NH-NO3?).

The most obvious difference is the color of the flame. KNO3 is whitish, and NaNO3 is yellowish. NaNO3 is also hydrophoric, making it unsutable for most pyrotechnic mixture if they need to be stored.

I used to make TONS of those "Sugar Smokers" for paintball in the 90s. I originally used KNO3, but it became rather hard to find, so I converted NaNO3 INTO KNO3 for a while. But eventually just used straight NaNO3. I used NaNO3 to make my "MEGA SMOKER", which was a 10lb bohemeth that I set off at the 1999 "Long Island Game".
To make a long story short... that was that LAST one I made!!

Nick

nah its 're' because its canadian.. Best guess anyways.. a couple of our words vary from the american way when it comes to er vs. re

I did some searching on .edu sites and it even varies there. Some have it as sodium, others as potassium.. So I'm assuming it's just interchangable and it makes sense really. Sodium is only one step above potassium. But the reactions would be more violent if it was made with potassium.

edit: nick beat me

pikilopetes??
never heard of those.

let's talk chemistry some more? no, wait...it's better if I dont' know how to make huge explosions. There was a reason my chemistry teacher never told us anything fun to do..it's cuz he knew we'd go out and try it.

My friend once found out how to make a nuke out of a hoover vaccum cleaner so he printed it out and asked our chem teacher if it would work and he said it wouldn't cuz the site was just a joke...but it was really funny

Pikilopetes are just fireworks that whistle really loudly when you light them. I'm not sure why you would want to blow one up, or how large the explosion would be, but there ya go...

oh ok. yeah I remember bottlerocket wars..good times, a few of my friends burned thier finger a bit but nothign serious since you can see them comming when it's dark.

I realyl dont' see the point of blowing them up either..it's just a loud shriek that's very annoying. something else that is loud is shooting bottlerockets or firecrackers into a wheelbarrel full of water...or better yet an empty metal 5 gallon bucket..just toss a few pack in and get ready to be deaf! It's lots of fun!
