Glass.. and stuff.

Not sure if you guys know, but aside from paintball, one of my hobbies is keeping reptiles.

I'm getting a bearded dragon soon, and these things grow like mofos. 1/2" a week until they're around 20 inches long.

I can't afford a 55 gallon tank to house them. Too expensive. So I'm making my own.

The beardies im getting will be about 5 inches when I get then in a couple weeks.

I'm starting off with a coffee table. Its going to serve as a stand/base. The part im working off is 43.5x18x1".

The glass panel on the big side will be 42.5"x10.5".

Its going to be 1/4" thick glass.

The big question I have is 'how do I cut it'. My dad suggested a diamond-point scribe, but is there a more effective method? And how much does one of these diamond-carbide scribes cost?

On the coffee table, I'm building a frame that will support teh glass. At the top, I'll probably drill a hole and bolt the corners togethor with an L'shaped brace. ITs all going to be glued togethor with 100% silicon glue.

I'm going to use acrylic for the bottom plate becuase Im too poor. I might use acrylic for the whole thing... But Bearded dragons can scratch and acrylic is very soft.

Any ideas/tips?

My dad used to do stained glass so he has some weird pizza cutter looking thing

But I suggest to use plexi-glass to do the cage. My little bro is a huge reptile freak...I think he has a Burmese? Guyana Red Tail Boas...mating pair of albino corn snakes...turtles and like 4 or 5 savvanah monitors...all his tanks=plexi custom made

You may want to try using acrylic instead of glass. Alot of large fishtanks are made out of arcylic since it has less of a tendency to crack and is cheaper.

You can get sheets of it at Home Depot or any other hardware store. Score and crack and then just glue the pieces together with some non-toxic silicone glue. Or if you don't need the water-proof silicone glue just use epoxy or something like that.

just go plastic or lexan....glass is heavy and serves no extra purpose except that it costs more.

Model 98

All these guns are gone. One by thief, two by fire. The memories persist.

This: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...4/IM000544.jpg

Or this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...4/IM000537.jpg

Thats not spraypaint, thats natural skin pigment. ITs called a red flame morph. Pretty cool...

I just ran the idea by my stepdad and he said stuff like how its not just my room its my brothers too and I never let him in my room (when in fact the door is never locked and hes welcome anytime), and how theres no room (when I just cleaned up my room majorly and specificly made room for my plans).. I also won't mention how I havent been 'rebeling" against my parents, have been doing what they ask of me and then some, and I just made honor roll in school, which is phenominal for me..

He said he'd talk to my mom, and I know my mom can convince him.. So I've pretty much got it in the bag.

My shop teacher said he'd let me use any of the equipment the school has, but I alreayd have most of what I need at home.

W00t!

sounds cool... i wanted a Ferret for the longest time and still do but never could convince the rents to let me get one...or two lol...and i started to build a cage for them...its usually alot cheaper if you just build your own stuff when it comes to animals cause the pet stores in my area are out to rob you

Same here... $60 for a possible diseased, malnourished, sick baby reptile. I just went after drivign school to check on the prices, and its $99 for a 40 gallon aquarium. I'm building a 39.6 gal for about $30.

I alreayd have experience in keeping reptiles so I have spare dome lamps, spare bulbs and cage accessories. Just need playsand, and acrylic, and the thumbs up from the houseowners.

If you look for a used tank it should be around $1 a gallon.

i.e. a 55 gallon tank should be $55-$60.
