The UN is the downfall of America.

Well, I said it. The UN is the downfall of America.

International organizations never accomplish anything. Too many differences, and too many hard-headed politicians that will never change their ways. Every international organization I can think of off the top of my head did fail, or is failing.

Take the League of Nations for example. After World War I, the US decided we needed to have an international organization, so, we started one. We forced all sorts of countries to join it, at the threat of embargoes and other things, yet we ourselves never joined the League of Nations, and it fell apart soon after it's creation.

Look at the UN right now. The aren't accomplishing anything. They didn't enforce their policies on Iraq (ie Weapons inspectors) and they didn't follow through on a lot of things. Also, the UN (and, admittedly, America) has turned a blind eye to the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan. We have simply not done anything about it. The US has taken a step in the right direction by stepping up and removing Saddam from power in Iraq by ourselves, but it's time we distance ourselves from the UN. It is breeding nothing but trouble. We need to step away from the UN and step into Sudan to help the innocent people being slaughtered.

international organizations suck. most of the counties in the un hate us, but on paper they look like they are our allies.

The UN must have done something in Iraq because no weapons of mass destruction were ever found right?

Country the size of Texas, 95% covered by desert. You could hide a vile of a chemical agent in a shoebox and bury it somewhere in the Iraqi desert, never to be found again.

I had such a rad post but I'm gonna stick to my policy of staying out of political debates on this website until the average age is above 14.

We have Satellite technology, capable of seeing anything in the world..

they won't use force, and are to afraid to step up to the plate and be the leading force they should. I'm all for the US breaking away, b/c the UN is frankly bull**** nowadays, and their "peacekeepers" suck balls, they are just more targets. Europe never could figure out that appeasment is the dumbest policy since maybe communism (in the form we all know it as, i know it's not incredibly stupid, just unabtainable thnx to human nature)

It's not that easy.

Also, the Leauge of Nations failed because the United States wasn't in it I believe.

Thank the Allied Powers from WWII for how useless it is. 5 countries with Veto Power on the PERMANENT Sec. Council. That's the main problem with the UN the way I see it.

That site makes absolutely no sense, denouncing the UN because you could be put on trial and have residing judges be from other countries is the whole point of the organization. The UN might work if it wasn't so overlooked. Think about it, what's the point when no one wants to abide by the decisions of the UN. We decide to enter Iraq, get no form of approval from the UN and go in anyways... and we wonder why it doesn't work.

An unedited quote from that site:
"Even more alarming, the United Nations is beginning to take aim at the God-given rights enjoyed by Americans since our great nation was founded. The right to self defense, use your own property, or even the right to have children may all be trampled if the United Nations is allowed to have the power it seeks."

the UN did pretty much nothing to stop the last 2 attempted genocides until it was too late
it is useless but is not the downfall of the US
the EU is the downfall of the US

remnants of chemicals were found in drains of iraqi scientists' homes. the ingredients for several gases were found in abundance (but hey, they were pesticides... for all those gardens they have in iraq ) sarin tipped artilary shells were found. scud missiles were found

Any of the above mentioned items were illegal and warranted invasion according to sanctions

So some chemicals were destroyed, some were never made, the artillery shells were later destroyed no? by the UN and scud missles, some of which were destroyed prior to the invasion were found. Why I am I still not impressed? Maybe it's because after listening to the republican rhetoric about Iraq's WMD, I was hoping they'd find tons to justify the invasion.

A small example
of some of the achievements of the UN:

By having deployed 42 peace-keeping forces as of 1996, the UN was able to restore calm to allow the negotiating process to go forward while saving millions of people from becoming casualties of conflicts. There are presently 16 active peace-keeping forces in operation.

Since 1945, the United Nations has been credited with negotiating 172 peaceful settlements that have ended regional conflicts.

More than 30 million refugees fleeing war, famine or persecution have received aid from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees since 1951.

UN agencies have worked to make safe drinking water available to 1.3 billion people in rural areas during the last decade.

A 13-year effort by the World Health Organization resulted in the complete eradication of smallpox from the planet in 1980. The eradication has saved an estimated $1 billion a year in vaccination and monitoring.

UNEP led a major effort to clean up the Mediterranean Sea. It encouraged adversaries such as Syria and Israel, Turkey and Greece to work together to clean up beaches. As a result, more than 50 per cent of the previously polluted beaches are now usable.

The UN Population Fund, through its family planning programmes, has enabled people to make informed choices, and consequently given families, and especially women, greater control over their lives. As a result, women in devloping countries are having fewer children - from six births per woman in the 1960s to 3.5 today.

While the UN isn't always able to kill/murder/dethrone national leaders, and impose it's rule where it sees just, the organization has helped billions of people since it has been created.

what is the point of blaming the UN?

the league of nations could possible have had success if they had ANY power whatsoever. The US was becoming a large military power at that time and Woodrow Wilson who proposed alot of what the L.O.N. was based on got screwed over by our senate because they were all about isolationism and ethnocentrism without any conflict outside out boundaries. Turning a blind eye to the world really helped.

I hate politics. Why can't we all smoke a bowl and quit fighting?!

UN should stick to helping people and stay out of political and military arenas.
