Future Air Force jets ??

http://users.rcn.com/sitzkrieg/war/J...l_Takeoff.mpeg

wow thats awesome !!! i bet in about 10-15 years there will be a lot of these around, then there wouldn't be the need for the big runways on carrier ships and then there will be a safer way to land instead of aiming for the rope to catch onto the hook thing. These are some cool jets

Actually, there will be FAR MORE of these jets than F-22's. The Lockheed/McDonald Douglas model won out over Boeing's bid just over a year and a half ago. Good thing, too- Boeing's "guppy" was fugly.

The first squadron of F-22's is just now being delivered to Langley, and Congress slashed orders for it from 2000 to a mere 200.

The F-35 JSF (these that you saw), will come in 3 versions:

- One for the Navy without VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) capability (will replace F-18 Hornets). Instead it will have a strengthened undercarriage for carrier operations.

-One for the Air Force, which will be basically the same as the Navy model (without strengthened undercarriage)

-One for the Marines (the only one with VTOL capability)

and whichever of those three that have been ordered by the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Australian Armed Forces, EU nations (Spain, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Belgium) and possibly some for Japan.

As you can see, I know my military aircraft.

wow i would think that the navy would want the vertical takeoff and landing bc it would be easier and safer on the carriers but i guess not.

good info Duo

There are usually load and range limitations of VTOL/STOVL that the navy won't want, because of the fact that they need all that they can get. And the Harriers take off and land vertically all the time on Naval carriers and Tarawa-class ships, so the deckings don't get hurt at all.

And IIRC, the Royal Navy is going to be the only other operator of the VTOL version of the F-35. The others will be Naval or AF versions

Damn, you said everything I was gonna. But the navy is having a STOL. It doesn't have the capability of vertical flight, but it does have some major thrst vectoring and pivoting so that it can make really short landings on carriers.

Damn duo. I hate you.. I should delete your post and take credit for it.

I'll start caring about it when it flies in to save my ass with close air support. Until then it's just another aircraft to me.

Ya i was gonna say something like that i even bought the whole show about this off the discovery channel, that this is cool ****...

It uses a lift fan that will generate a barier of cold air so that the jet doesnt suck up its own exhaust fumes.

I believe that the raptor cost something like 100 mil.. but im not totally sure on that figure

The raptor is one the most expensive planes...its insane! But its the fastest stealth fighter. Also, thank god they are replacing the F-18, I never really liked the F-18s, that and they have been around for a long time.
I have always liked the F-16s. I just think there sexy.

And damn Duo, nice info. Did you just pull that out of your ass or what? Thats impressive. I was like, Im impressed.

lol

Truth: I really did pull it out of my ass. Knew that straight off the top of my head. And that's just because I'm a huge military nerd.

And yes, the Marines have their own small carriers that they use to launch and retrieve their AV-8B Harrier jets. They're basically Escort carriers (aka mini carriers) but they lack steam catapults.

Marines also take off from land-based fields. But they still use the VTOL capability.

Jtpaintball70 said it all for why the navy doesn't want VTOL. Plus it would make steam catapults obsolete, and therefore all Nimitz-class carriers would need a major refit to turn that system into useful space. That's def something the military doesn't want now- budget cuts. And they aren't in much of a position to demand billions for new full-size carriers.

Anyone else feel like it would be more frail than a more 'traditional' plane?

the price difference is due to the diffrent roles. this is an all purpose fighter/bomber. the F-22 is a hevy duty air superiority fighter. therefore it is expensive but not needed in very large numbers.
