Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

PICTURE YOURSELF IN A BOAT ON A RIVER
WITH TANGERINE TREES AND MARMALADE SKIES.
SOMEBODY CALLS YOU, YOU ANSWER QUITE SLOWLY,
A GIRL WITH KALEIDOSCOPE EYES.

CELLOPHANE FLOWERS OF YELLOW AND GREEN
TOWERING OVER YOUR HEAD.
LOOK FOR THE GIRL WITH THE SUN IN HER EYES
AND SHE'S GONE.

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
AH ---

FOLLOW HER DOWN TO A BRIDGE BY A FOUNTAIN,
WHERE ROCKING HORSE PEOPLE EAT MARSHMALLOW PIES.
EV´RYONE SMILES AS YOU DRIFT PAST THE FLOWERS
THAT GROW SO INCREDIBLY HIGH.

NEWSPAPER TAXIS APPEAR ON THE SHORE
WAITING TO TAKE YOU AWAY.
CLIMB IN THE BACK WITH YOUR HEAD IN THE CLOUDS
AND YOU'RE GONE.

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
AH ---

PICTURE YOURSELF ON A TRAIN IN A STATION
WITH PLASTICINE PORTERS WITH LOOKING GLASS TIES.
SUDDENLY SOMEONE IS THERE AT THE TURNSTILE,
THE GIRL WITH KALEIDOSCOPE EYES.

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
AH ---

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
AH ---

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS, OH,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,

Now I know this could go in the music section, but I would like it to get a little more thought (and attention). Also, it goes quite a bit beyond the music.

I've researched and searched and done more research. I have found the two disputing arguments of it being about LSD, or not. I won't go into high detail, but basically they go as follows

Against Drug use:
John's [Lennon] son came home one day with a picture of his classmate Lucy in the sky with stars or diamonds. John claims in several interviews that he got the idea from this, and wrote the song. He also says none of the song was written while on drugs, nor does it refer to them. All the beatles support this idea and still do.

For: First, the obvious, the acronym. Lucy, Sky, Diamonds. John said he had not even noticed untill after Sgt. Pepper's when someone pointed it out. Also, it's no secret the Beatles were on drugs for many of their songs. Watch Yellow Submarine or any of their other videos, and it is indisputable. Next, to the content of the song. Anyone can identify the lyrics as being suspectable of LSD infulence. The vividness of the imagrey is unbelievable. Kaleidoscope eyes, rocking horse people eating marshmellow pies, and newspaper taxis, just to name a few.

There is much more support for both sides. I personally think you need to listen to the song yourself and decide. Either way, no one can deny how awesome the song really is. I wouldn't think any different about the song if it was proved either way.

Here's some Wikipedia that's a bit slanted:

Julian's drawing
According to the Beatles, one day in 1966 Lennon's son Julian came home from nursery school with a drawing he said was of his classmate, a girl named Lucy. Showing the artwork to his father, young Julian described the picture as "Lucy - in the sky with diamonds."

Julian later said, "I don't know why I called it that or why it stood out from all my other drawings but I obviously had an affection for Lucy at that age. I used to show dad everything I'd built or painted at school and this one sparked off the idea for a song about Lucy in the sky with diamonds."

His son's artwork appears to have inspired Lennon to draw heavily on his own childhood affection for Lewis Carroll's Wool and Water chapter from Through the Looking-Glass. At least one lyric was influenced by both Carroll and skits on a popular British comedy programme (the Goon Show) making references to plasticine ties, which showed up in the song as Plasticine porters with looking glass ties. Carroll's work has also been cited as having influenced Lennon's two books, In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works.

Reference to drugs
Since the initials of the title are LSD and the lyrics are psychedelic, some have suggested the song refers to drug use, and there was some controversy surrounding this when the recording was first released and getting airplay. While Lennon and the Beatles were often frank about their drug use, for decades they denied the song had anything to do with LSD.

In a 1971 interview Lennon recalled hearing about how the initials spelt out LSD, then checking if the same thing had happened with other Beatles songs and finding "they didn't spell out anything." In 1980 he confirmed the images were taken from Alice in Wonderland.

In The Beatles Anthology (2000), Ringo claimed he was present when Julian showed his "crazy little painting". Paul recounted the time he and John spent in John's music room, swapping suggestions for lyrics, saying, "We never noticed the LSD initial until it was pointed out later, by which point people didn't believe us."

this is one of the big things that annoys me about the beatles... they did all sorts of drugs, it was obvious, they were a big influence on the world, and yet they never admitted to it. *sigh* it takes celebrities to show the world things that need to be said, but the beatles failed to do that

They did admit to it. But they often dodged it.

She died in June 2005 at the age of 47 of breast cancer. From the story:
"Lucy was a few years older than Julian Lennon when he enrolled at the private Heath House School, in Weybridge, Surrey. But because John Lennon and the other Beatles used to visit the Richardson family's antique and jewelry shop, she knew the little boy. So when he became homesick and unsettled she would be called out of class to sit with him while he drew pictures. One of these pictures was of Lucy.
Lucy's sister, Mary remembers 'One day John Lennon came into the shop and said, "Hello, Lucy in the sky with diamonds." We thought it was just John being John.' When a song with that name appeared on Sgt. Pepper, the Richardson family began to wonder. And when Lennon announced he had been inspired by his son's picture of a girl called Lucy, the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle came together.
It was in a 1975 interview that Lennon said 'Julian came in one day with a picture about a school friend of his named Lucy. He had sketched in some stars in the sky and called it Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. Mary, who still runs the antiques shop recalls, 'It was then we realized why he had been calling our Lucy, Lucy in the sky.'
Lucy remembered the times when she would sit with Julian as he drew pictures. She was rather chuffed to realize she had inspired the song title, but was very modest about it: 'There was another girl called Lucy who thought the song was about her, but we always knew it was our Lucy.' Julian Lennon, has recollected his drawing in interviews: 'I obviously had an affection for Lucy at that age'" (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
Whether or not its true, I dont know. But I personally think that its just a coincidence.

they definatly addmitted to there drug use. John had said he has taken thousands of trips (LSD). The other beatles definalty did as well, but John seemed to be the biggest into LSD. You must think about the time they were INSANELY famous. They were the biggest thing around, they had more money then anyone country could spend (exageration). Drugs were super easy for them to get and everyone was doing them. They could have done a lot more than they did. There drug use im my opinion was a big reason that some of there songs are so cool.
Back to topic. Since we KNOW they did quite a few drugs including a lot of LSD, it is very hard to say that LSD had no effect on there song. But on the other hand i cannot deny the picture which im sure is true. Basically my opinion is that it was mot likely a mix of both the drawing and LSD. Just my opinion, i do not know which had a greater influence but i think they both definatly had an affect.

I have a question... Who cares?

They are probablly telling a different version of the truth. I think when Julian came home to show his dad the picture and he then got an idea for a song, it didn't stop there.

"Hey, this is a great idea for a song, but with acid it would be so much better."
"Yeah thats a good idea..."

*2 hours later*

"LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,
AH ---"

So yes, in a way, he got the IDEA for the song without any drugs whatsoever, but when the song as a whole was being made, there was some serious trippin' going on. Afterwords, it was all written down

i have nothing really to say about the beatles.

but if you are looking for a website that goes extensivly into drugs (definations, pictures, journal experiences) that is very helpful, check out this site.

www.erowid.org/

quoted from them "documenting the complex relationship between humans and physcoactives"
