a question about processors

A question about processors
so, im wanting a new gaming pc, and im looking at 2 different kinds, both have about 1 gig of ram and a nice grahics card, the difference is that one is a dual core pentium 2800, and one is a P4 3200. My question is this, would the dual core processor take a simple task such as running a game and use both processors?, or would it only use one. I guess what im really asking is, is there any point to having a dual core pc, if your not going to run multiple powerful applications at the same time?
thanks

Make sure you have the same socket CPU as MOBO, if you're upgrading and your current rig is old.

I'm pretty sure it will only use one of the cores. Not entirely sure though.

It will dedicate one core to the game, then the other one will be used for background applications and processes (Average computers have as many as 50 or more running at any given moment). So it's worth having IMO, because your game will not get cobbed up by background processes.

it uses both cores simultaniously. I have one. It splits the work equally.
