1996 Explorer

(AS YOU ALL KNOW I POSTED THE SAME THING ON THE LOUNGE....HERE IT IS SORTA UPDATED THO)

Ok so the other day I was coming on the 826 State Road, I saw an Explorer that the dude had been selling, I grabbed my cell phone and called him. He was telling me a description of the car... its a 96 Explorer EVERYTHING new. New Paint, New Tires, New Fuel Pump, Battery, etc. The car looked realyl sturdy and well taken care of. now the KBB value on it is 3000 but the guy was saying he's selling it for 2700. i wanna talk about it with my dad see if he can possibly loan me a grand so i can buy it...but i wanna know if its worth the money first of all. its a 96 which is already 10-11 years old. it'll be my first car, and a truck at that, how wll insurance be...please remember i learned in a mustang. i know it has its vantages such as being a big car and stuff but also disadvantages such as low gas mileage....

WHAT DOES PBF THINK???

the car looks something like this...

NOW! I just spoke to the seller, he's on the otherside of town, he was telling me how he changed every belt and he kept the car well maintained. The car has a CD Player with a 6-CD Changer. The car has a V8 Engine with an Automatic Tranny... and of course the FORD AC which is freakin AWESOME! He was telling me to check out the car whenever I want...so im gonna talk about it with my dad, he doesnt want me to get a car at the moment but im gonna try and convince him to let me do so, so far i can only afford half of the car, if he could pay the other half ill pay him back even if it means i have the car sitting in my front yard til i can get a tag and insurance!

BTW....how WILL insurance be for a 16 year old, this being my first car??

Your insurance will be hell, it will be real high. The explorer isnt a fast car or something like that so it wont cost as much but still being 16 makes it expensive.

idk about it for a first car. i mean it looks freakin great. but with gas being what it is, and im assuming u have to pay for ur own gas? if u dont have to pay ur own gas and insurance go for it. other wise......first car...id look into little cars/pickups, they get great mileage most the time. and insurance usually isnt to bad.

BUT, if ur set on this car......id say go for it.

yeah i figured im turning 17 in a few days and my driving record is spotless. so far.... but yeah i know my insurance is gonna be helll! thats why i probably wont eveninsure the car til graduation and keep driving around in my parents cars.

AND yeah im paying my own gas, but i dont go too far off, i make short drives to work, sometimes school at night. but for the most part i dont go across town so much, unless i REALLY need it.

Have the car under one of your parents names. Insurance will be cheaper.

I think the older explorers like this are great vehicles. My friend has one with 175,000+ miles on it and they have owned it since it was brand new and they havent had to many problems with it. That SUV looks like it is in great condition. Make sure you find out if it has been in any wrecks though, it could have been destroyed and the guy had it all fixed up on the outside to make it look good again. How many miles does it have on it? Just be sure to look under the vehicle and look for any leaks (oil etc.). Your insurance wont be to bad compared to a sports car considering it is kind of old and is an SUV, but the explorers are kind of top heavy and it might tend to flip easier than other SUV's/ I dont think the tipping will be a problem as long as you dont drvie like a jack ass and go around a sharp turn at 80 miles an hour...

I'd jump on that deal.

Meh. I happen to work in a shop, and i make a killing off the suspensions on those things. I recomend checking all 4 ball joints. Most likely bad. Then check all your tie rods. Also probably bad. Then after all of that it will need an alignment.

On the fluid notes. Take it to a shop and have them pull the diff plugs and check the fluid quality and for metal shaveings.

I would not get this if i were you.
You can see its a ford and they already did the work and circled the problem on the grille and highlighted it in blue.

first off, a truck WILL NOT Kill you for insurance... my insurance on my jeep is very reasonable, and it is 4 wheel drive.. i've had it since i was 16.. my insurance went down when i turned 18. second, 19 or so MPG isnt as bad as you think it is.. if you have a decent job, even if you're making 6 an hour, you'll still have enough for gas provided you work more than like 1 day a week.

only problem i see is it's a ford (not much of a ford fan)

as long as you think it'll stay reliable, go for it, but if you get it and it starts taking some expensive craps, then it sucks, but i think it's worth it.. i have a lot of fun with mine, and i wouldnt want anything else...

EDIT: i just got a quote in geico for FULL COVERAGE on my jeep, even with my 2 speeding tickets it'd be 144 a month.

thats ****ing stupid, i know plenty of kids that have explorers with 120,000+ miles on them with no problems

and for 2700, you can't go wrong.
