Second car decisions

Now I got my license ~6 months ago, and my dad gave me his old truck, which is a Chevy 1500 extended cab, with a 4.3 v-6 in it. Now, this truck is in damn good condition(after we patched the rocker panels), but 16mpg is not fun for a highschool kid with no winter job. Plus Ill be a junior this year and I plan on commuting to college when i go, and thats a 45 minute drive each way, so 16mpg would rape me. So by next spring/early summer I hope to sell my truck(kbb is 3 grand), and have enough cash saved up to buy a decent vehicle.

Now enough of that. Right now im hoping to sell my truck and get hopefully around 3 grand for it. Now I figure I can come up with a grand or two easily enough, so my budget on this car is 5k MAXIMUM, preferably under 4. My top priorities on this car are insurance, and gas. So Basically im looking for a 4 door 4 banger. As for cars, I was looking at late 90's jettas, 90's saab 900's, volvo 850's, and subaru legacy's. Now I would like this car to be midly quick, but handling is more important than speed, as up here all we have are twisty roads. And it MUST be either FWD or AWD, as RWD in the winter is insane. I would kill to pick up a fox body but with insurance and RWD, I cant.

So what do you guys suggest?
