how did someone survive this?

ok, for those who havent seen this, a car hits the wall in a nascar practice session, and he hits the gate that opens to let cars onto the track, and it breaks open when he hits it.... so basically he hit the end of a concrete wall, head on.

the car is completely ripped in half, hes out in the open, and THEN another car hits him.

u cant really tell whats going on, but the last couple seconds, when he gets out

well first of all, race cars are built to take a beating and ultimately protect the driver.
all teh parts flying off take the inerta away from teh driver so the affect of him hitting the wall is not nearly what we would feel in a passenger car. (I'm nto saying it's silky and smooth, I'm saying it's not as hard as it would be if the car stayed intact)
The drivers wear a 4 point saftey harnes and a hans device for reason such as this.

And finally, it's bristol. Bristol is one of the slowest nascar tracks. Top speeds of maybe 130. Considering the car that hit him was comming out of the turn adn that he had a heads up from his spotter, he wasnt' going nearly the speed he would have bene if he were racing.

anyone remember steve parks crash at Atlanta where his gas tank broke open and the fuel was ignited? he also broke the concrete barrier..it was a pretty intense wreck.

or the rusty wallace "cartwheel" show down the tallendage straightaway? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjel7nFlK2Q
and daytona as well! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PDHi...elated&search=

those were some of the worst wrecks.

yea, i kno the car tearing in half absorbed the force of hitting the wall that hard, but what if the car tore in half 5 inches further back? or what if that guy hitting him (probabl doing 65mph) hit him 10 inches to the right, he would of been crushed. I know 65mph sounds kinda slow for a racecar, but it'll still kill ya

It wouldnt' have torn at any different point. Race cars are designed to do specific things in crashes and they (very very rarely not) ALWAYS do the same thing. I've sene wrecks where all that was left was the rollcage around the driver. Those roll cages are pretty tough things, it takes quite a bit to crush them. but I see what you're saying. That guy had a lot of luck riding with him as well as math.

i know roll cages have crush points, the front end of a roll cage is designed to be like armor, but the rear of the car is designed to crush into a small chunk of steel. They sure aint designed to ever tear in half.

i love how at the end, u see the back half, the front half, but the door (the middle where the driver sits) isnt there, wow i cant beliee this guy still races. cats only get so many lives...

It's actually a 5 point safety harness, if not 6 point.

A 5 point is one over each shoulder, one over each side of the lap, and one coming up the crotch. The crotch one isn't nearly as bad as most people seem to think.

well you're the one askig how he survived. I imagine hitting a wall and then getting run into by another car does a number on your neck.
