Bin Laden Dead?

From BBC.co.uk

Probe into 'Bin Laden death' leak

President Jacques Chirac has ordered an inquiry into the leak of a French secret service memo claiming that Osama Bin Laden had died.

Mr Chirac told reporters he was surprised the memo had been leaked, and refused to comment on the claim itself.

A French newspaper quoted a document as saying the Saudi secret services were convinced the al-Qaeda leader had died of typhoid in Pakistan in late August.

Officials in Pakistan and the US said they could not confirm the account.

Saudi-born Bin Laden was based in Afghanistan until the Taleban government there was overthrown by US-backed forces in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks.

Since then, US and Pakistani officials have regularly said they believe he is hiding in the lawless border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

His last videotaped message was released in late 2004, but several audio tapes have been released this year - the last at the end of June, in which Bin Laden praised Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, who was killed in an American air strike.

Internal organs paralysed

In its report, French regional daily L'Est Republicain said it had obtained a copy of a DGSE foreign intelligence service report dated 21 September.

"According to a usually reliable source, the Saudi services are now convinced that Osama Bin Laden is dead," it read.

"The information gathered by the Saudis indicates that the head of al-Qaeda fell victim, while he was in Pakistan on August 23, 2006, to a very serious case of typhoid that led to a partial paralysis of his internal organs."

Mr Chirac said: "I am surprised that a confidential memo from the secret services has been published, therefore I've ordered the defence minister to start an inquiry.

"As far as the information itself is concerned, it's not confirmed in any way. Therefore I have no comment at all."

The Washington-based IntelCenter, which monitors terrorism communications, said it was not aware of any similar reports on the internet.

"We've seen nothing from any al-Qaeda messaging or other indicators that would point to the death of Osama Bin Laden," director Ben Venzke told the Associated Press news agency.

Seems kinda sketchy to me, but not a complete impossibility. He's not exactly in his youth.

It was from a French report. Bascially, that takes any credibility that the possibility had and throws it out the window. :maybedodgy:

Update: 'No evidence' of Bin Laden death

The Saudi government has denied a French newspaper report saying France's secret services believe Osama Bin Laden is dead.

The newspaper quoted the Saudi secret services as saying the al-Qaeda leader had died of typhoid in Pakistan.

But, in a statement, the Saudi government said it had "no evidence" that Bin Laden was dead.

The French president has ordered an inquiry into the leaked French secret service memo containing the claim.

'Speculation'

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has no evidence to support recent media reports that Osama Bin Laden is dead," the Saudi government said.

It would be very nice to confirm that he is dead - in Pakistan, Afghanistan, New York or wherever, but I think such claims are unsubstantiated
Mahmud Ali Durrani
Pakistan's ambassador to US

"Information that has been reported otherwise is purely speculative and cannot be independently verified."

French newspaper L'Est Republicain quoted a document as saying that the Saudi secret services were convinced the al-Qaeda leader had died of typhoid in Pakistan in late August.

Officials in Pakistan and the US said they could not confirm the account.

Pakistan's ambassador to the US, Mahmud Ali Durrani told BBC News 24 that he doubted the claims were true:

"It would be very nice to confirm that he is dead - in Pakistan, Afghanistan, New York or wherever, but I think such claims are unsubstantiated."

'Paralysis'

In its report, the French regional daily said it had obtained a copy of a DGSE foreign intelligence service report dated 21 September.

BFD just another man in the world. I think it's asinine for people to think that, should he die, there will be no more terrorism. His death won't change anything.

On the other hand, I read today that the death toll has totalled more than those who died on 9/11. How useful.

i could care less about bin laden, when you look at the facts - we had it coming regardless. there could have been alot more done to prevent it all from the beginning, but the US gov't (not bush, not clinton, but for years) just ignored all of it

I realize that Bin Laden is just another man, and that his death won't change anything. However, I still would like to see him dead. I simply believe that he does not deserve to live.

Also, as much as I am against war in Iraq, I fully support the decision to attack Afghanistan. When a group that runs another country attacks yours, you can't just sit back and do nothing. It's unfortunate that so many lives have been lost, but I feel that retaliation against Al Queda in Afghanistan was entirely necessary.

thats the thing though, the alleged "group" was just a continuation of unfinished business the US left in afghanistan. thats why its so stupid that people sit and just blame al qaeda for everything. im not defending them, but if you look at the people in afghanistan's perspective, well we had it coming. the problem stems way back unfortunately to a point that the US could have fixed but just left open for the rest to happen, 9/11 and so on.. i blame our gov't more than al qaeda or bin laden, because it was just a problem waiting to happen and something that could have easily been prevented.

I read an article today that said something along the lines of: US intelligence agencies believe that the Iraq war has caused more terrorism and has been counter productive in fighting global terrorism yada yada.

*Insert moronic NYY quote here*

Yada yada.

considering Bush's war plans have killed as many people as those who died in 9/11, I don't think he's any more deserving of breath than Bin Laden

Maybe its because I don't have a television.

You don't need to be condescending about it. I don't have a TV and wanted to see where he got his information.

I searched the BBC and didn't see it, so I asked.

Get off your high horse.

"Hey um, president Roosevelt, when you declare war on Japan, make sure you only kill as many, but preferably less, that the number of people who died in Pearl Harbor. We want to keep the tally even ok?"

The world has gone soft. WW2 was dropped not one, but two NUCLEAR BOMBS on Japan. The MAJORITY of the dead being civilians:

"OK guys, wars over! we won! yay! lets all go home and drink and smoke and go to college! Wait there's radiation? They were civilians? Oops sorry. So yeah...here's your new constitution btw. Oh and just remember, you can never make a standing army, so don't worry about defending yourself. I mean who wants to defend themselves anyway?

Oh whats that, rest of the free world? Your happy the war's over too? yeah that bomb was pretty cool huh? Yeah i know it was ****in awesome!"

Now:

"Alright look, we went to war and people are dieing. Granted, people die in war, but **** it lets go home and quit while the job isn't done. I can't take this anymore guys, people shouldn't die in war its just unbearable when it happens!

I can't take it any more! Mr. President, from now on I only want to go to a war when there is a definate date and time on when its over. don't go to war unless you have the exact date and time that the war will be over! It better be pretty close to its start because we can't lose people in war. We aren't supposed to. It's just not possible to have people die in war!"
