Macbook=Slow download times?

So I recently bought a Macbook. I'm loving it thus far, my only problem is that downloads are downloaded at extremely slow rates. I'm talking rates of 80-130 kb/s where it should be more along the lines of 280-300+ kp/s. I have downloaded on both Safari and Firefox, both with these slow download rates. Is there any way I can improve this?

Thanks

What your network setup like?

The farther down the network from the internet connection the slower the rates of transfer.

Also some routers will limit the speed based on the number of connections.

And WIFI quality can change as offten as the weather

I am hooked up wirelessly...with a ok to good signal. Thing is, my old windows based laptop was getting those download rates. Even at excellent signal it still gets the same download speed even though my other laptop got 2-3 times faster...

Who makes your base station?

Cause my Powerbook will get better Download rates from different brands of routers even when I am right next to them with the best possable signal.

Both routers are made by Netgear. One is just a regular 802.11 B/G router and the other one(the one i am currently connected to) is the whole MIMO or whatever setup.

Do Macbooks have a built in firewall that would slow down download speeds???

it's not your computer software. It's all b/c of the things handling the connection. Your internet company, your router and network. Also think of the server you are downloading off of, it may not offer a super fast rate.

Thats awesome...too bad they really aren't. Compare a mac to a windows based system when video editing, etc the mac will process and render faster. OSX runs much more efficiently then windows, plus i don't have to worry about running antivirus or ad-aware. It sure is nice.

I work on a windows system everyday with LOTS of video editing and graphic design. 95% of my co-workers use macpro's and there nothing but a pain in the ass when your rushing to get files thru the network of crap.

Most SMART people who are using windows these days havent seen the blue screen of death or gotten a virus/adware in years.

you cant really avoid ad-ware unless you dont use the internet.

I still use my PC for some things, but IMO my mac is way nicer than my PC. Even though windows isnt difficult to use, OS X is even easier IMO, and it runs much better.

Linux, while a little harder to use than OS X or winders, I think gives you the most options though.

XFE envoirment is nice. its lightweight like apples. I wish you could change your desktop envoirment on windows.

I love how you are trying to challenge my intelligence based on computer knowledge. To let you know, I havn't seen the blue screen since my ****ty windows 98 system. I have not downloaded a virus either. However, it is literally impossible to avoid adware. In fact I have fixed several other peoples computers.

Yeah...BB4win is another (blackbox style).

I am going to have to agree that as far as customability wise, Linux is on top. Like for me...I've grown to dislike window bars. As you can see with my desktop shots I have one autohide panel with my menu and a few other things...but anymore it seems like I use keyboard shortcuts (alt+f2 for a "run" window, alt+f3 for a console, and of course alt+tab for switching windows) more and more...especially since I got transparency to work.

Keyword being most. Back when Windows was still my primary OS I would still get an occasional BSOD just from "average" (for me) use. And while it was nothing malicious, I did get 2 instances of spyware/adware while I've had my own computer...both were the fault of my brother, though...he doesn't use it anymore...and when he's tried he didn't know what to do. All that being said I wouldn't call the adware stuff "problems," just "facts of windows life."

I much prefer Linux now days.
