College Guidance

Well guys, its my junior year in highschool so that means the fun job of deciding what i want to do and where i want to do it. For a while, I wanted to be a computer engineer, but I want to stay around here(maine), and there isnt really any demand for computer engineers around here, so I threw out that idea in favor of being a civil engineer. Well I have been thinking about it, and realized that I might have more fun in anohter type of career. One thing that I love to do is debate. I have one AP class where we have quite a few debates, and I love them, especially political debates. I just like argueing. And by debate I mean intelligent debate, not OMG BUSH IS TEH SUCK YOU NOOB!!!!! kinda stuff. Plus, Im not that big on math, and while i used to love it, I realize now that that was just becuase before middle school it was easy as hell, then they moved me to an accelerated program.

So basically what im asking for is just you guys opiniong on what direction I should look in, I was thinking maybe political sciences, laywer(shudders), stuff like that. not looking for you guys to decide for me, just looking for a push in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

well im more of an art person, always have been. math pretty much bores me to death. ive decided to go to college for Graphic Art, Web Design, and maybe film, because i love making movies.

it all depends on what interests you the most. i understand why your asking, I just had to say it.

But I'm currently working on a major in Marketing and Public Relations at our school, I'm deffinitley staying around my home-town, and there's a ton of suprisingly good and well paying advertising firms in the downtown Columbia area (30 minute drive)

you dont pre-decide a job before you got o college.. you know no one really ends up doing what they majored in right? my dad's friend majored in film, and works as a manager for some garment company..

i hate when people like claim theyre going to college to do this, and get this job. as if its that easy. and they assume in the 4,5,6, years theyre in college they wont change or become interested in different things. my older brother was a pre-law major, and now he majors in philosophy.

Right now I'm a Junior too and I'm in the same situation. I'm looking for an aviation career. I'm already a student pilot and I'm really enjoying it so I'm probably gonna work towards becoming a flight instructor. But if I change my mind I have a plan to fasttrack into an airforce academy so I won't go in debt with flight school costs and hopefully fly for an airline someday. If that doesn't work I'm still really interested in becoming an aeronautical engineer.

Just using myself as an example. Have backup plans that are still enjoyable and of interest. There are so many possabilities in life.

and none of it is easy.

work hard..and success is inevitable no matter what you do.

I hope that wasnt pointed to me. I just said those were the things im going to college for, not necessarily what i want/going to major in.

you act like I have my whole life planned.
I know what I want to do, but I agree things can change. 75% of college studnets change their major at least twice

edit: I think you were thrown off by major, but at our school we choose our cluster of studies our sophmore year and our majors our junior year. It's just a guideline to what we want to do.

I'm not thinking of what i'm going to major in durring college yet, but marketing is something that I enjoy doing

You could be a poli sci teacher.

-Andrew wants to get a masters or PhD(either right away or eventually) and teach

or he could do something else with the degree.

Just saying. there are more options. Though I think in any field dealing with the public sector you must have a masters degree to make it profitable in the private sector.

I am not sure what the progam is like at other schools, but the one here allows you pretty much take all the classes you want, specializing in certain areas you are interested in (for me, foreign policy/national security)

Granted, it will not do you much good unless you get a graduate degree, but I'm not really planning on becoming a lawyer.

It sounds like you're for sure geared towards a liberal arts/ classics based education. Or at least a curriculum that has a strong Core(Gen Ed) in the classics/ liberal arts. From there you can pick a major at that school and maybe politics or philosophy(they're very similar majors) could be your choice of major.

Thanks guys, Like I said, im not trying to say definatively what i want to do, I just want to have at least some direction as to what im doing when I get to college.

Above: Im not much or art either, Im a horrible artist.
ORRLY: My grades are fairly good, IM taking one AP class(ap us history), honors precal(around here juniors usually take geometry), honors chem and some other lame ass easy classes. I have other actual classes, just not this trimester. The only class im having trouble in is Precal, becuase im horrible at algebra 2 type stuff, which is what precal is. Other than that im passing the ap class and chem with ~80's.

The precal thing is what sorta steered me away from engineering, as Im not good at algebra. And I do enjoy politics alot.

Thanks DHill, although I've always been iffy on Liberal arts becuase well....... its liberal, and its arts. im republican and am horrible at art, so :P.

Thanks guys, any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Liberal arts has nothing to do with Democrats or the liberal stance on political issues.

Liberal arts is the education based on the Classics.

In Philosophy you'll read Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Nietzche(sp?), John Paul II, and others.

In literature you'll read Homer, Dante, Milton, Jane Austen, Herman Melville, the Greek tragedists and comedians, Shakespeare, and so on.

History gives you a great view on whatever eras you choose, whether it be western civilizations(Ancient greece and rome up through the present day) or American Civilization. Eastern history isn't part of a standard liberal arts program, though if you are a history major you will delve into it.

Politics lets you read a lot of the same stuff that philosophy gives you, and youll also get to read Toqueville, Hamilton, Jefferson, Madison, Marx, and other great writers.

An education in liberal arts again, has NOTHING AT ALL to do with democrats or liberalism. You will learn in history about liberalistic thought that changed much throughout the past century and a half, but that has nothing to do with being a democrat. If you have any questions let me know, but just keep in mind that it is NOT artsy and its NOT democratic(my school is a Catholic, very conservative school). I'm a moderate conservative, and trust me, the majority of the people at my school are further right than you can believe at first.

So ask away if you have questions about it.

philosophy is whatever major you choose, like my brother currently takes alot of politcal philosophy /metaphysics courses at college, but doesn't really read classic philosophy.

you know i hate when people claim their interested in philosophy, but know nothing about it. ill admit i thought i knew what it was - but it's alot more complicated. in certain ways, it's just as complicated as math or physics when you really read into it. just cause you read a book by plato, doesn't mean you've read philosophy. and the general concept and understanding of it is beyond complicated. i've tried to read the books my brother has read, and i've read his essays and i still don't understand about 95% of it.. right now he's trying to finish up his required courses cause he still hasn't done alot of them, so once he graduates he's planning at least to get a job to pay off debts, then go to grad school mabye at stoneybrook and try to become some type of professor in philosophy.

I was being sarcastic Dhill , i forget that now in order to show sarcasm you have to use a dodgy, so please excuse me.

But on a serious note, What exactly does political sciences entail? I grasp the general concept, as my cousin is majoring in it at the moment, but I dont really know exactly what it is. It sounds like something I would like, as Im quite interested in politics( a hell of lot more than most of the other kids in our school), and it just sounds like something i might like.

I to am a moderate conservative, but im atheist, and i know some people who are super hardcore conservatives at school.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

Don't want to Hijack, but instead of making a new thread:

I'd like to go into the field of Audio Engineering, Mixing, Live Sound, Production, etc. Any suggestions? I'm taking a Music Technology course in school, get good grades, play an instrument, and know my theory.

Just looking for general advice. Sorry for hijacking

And on an ultra conservative/ignorant/idiotic forum like this....I would assume the average member on here would not know what the liberal arts are. No apology necessary
