GTO Out, G8 In.

Basically, the GTO and current Grand Prix are dead. An American version of the Holden Commodore SS replaces them both in '08. This leaves room for a two-door, Camaro based, Pontiac.

Rear-drive Pontiac Grand Prix replacement spied in Australia

By BOB GRITZINGER

AutoWeek | Published 01/15/07, 3:16 pm et

General Motors will draw on its Australian Holden division for a new rear-wheel-drive sedan to replace the Pontiac Grand Prix. The Holden Commodore SS will be rebadged as the 2008 Pontiac G8 when it arrives in the U.S. late this year or early next year, according to published reports.

GM vice chairman Bob Lutz spilled the beans on plans for the car at the Detroit auto show and promised that more details will be forthcoming at the Chicago show in February.

Its such a logical thing to do, Lutz said. The volume range is 30,000 to 50,000. It depends on how we price it. Reports indicate pricing will be around $25,000.

The latest Pontiac will draw on the Holden Commodore that went on sale in Australia in August 2006. The right-hand-drive model must be re-engineered for left-hand drive for the U.S. Spy shots reveal that work is well under way, along with new sheetmetal, to distinguish it from its Aussie cousin.

G8 will come with a choice of V6 or V8 engines, including a 6.0-liter 362-hp, 390-lb-ft V8 coupled to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

GM previously sold a rebadged Holden Monaro as the Pontiac GTO in the United States, and despite the cars strong appeal to enthusiasts, sales of the 2004 to 2006 models did not meet expectations.

Hawt car, but just remember, Pontiac has yet to add their "touch" to it: The dual angled grilles in the front. It could look completely different. Only time will tell.

I like the Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) GT-P.

390hp, 383 ft/lb 5.4l Boss V8, 6-spd T56, Brembo brakes, 19" wheels

Or the F6 Typhoon

362hp @ 5250rpm, 405 ft/lbs @ 2000rpm to 4250rpm DOHC Turbo 4.0l 6cyl

Ford needs to make these available over here. That is, if they'd ever get off the Mustang's nuts and let something else be faster

That's the thing. Ford knows how to build great vehicles, but if they don't fit into their niche they aren't bringing them here. The Mustang is their bread and butter and anything that might hurt mustangs sales is a no go. People inside Ford have been talking about bringing the GT-P here for years, but it always seems to get shot down.

If I had thr $60k+ to import it over here I would do so in a heartbeat. I just don't understand why they would care about selling so many Mustangs if they could sell the GT-P or Typhoon when the latter 2 would be more expensive and therefore make more $.

Technically they went from 303hp (GrandPrix GXP) to 362hp.

However, with a few mods, 400+HP would be EASY to get. If they don't **** up the front end (or the rear) then I'd be tempted to trade my Grand Prix in for one.
