Basically it's a worldwide effort to get major governments and organizations to take action to capture Joseph Kony, who is the head of the LRA, an army that he made by abducting children (over 30 000 and counting) from Uganda and surrounding countries and forcing them to do his every order. He takes kids as young as 8 and forces the boys into soldiers and forces the girls into sexual enslavement. He's #1 on the ICC's list of most wanted war criminals. Even with all of this, only about 1% of the world has heard of him. Basically the mission of the video and the project is to make Kony "famous" enough that people start to take action and raise awareness, with a goal of catching him by the end of 2012.

I read the book called "Boy soldier" that was written about the child wars of Africa... makes you sick to think that over 30,000 kids are being indoctrinated into warriors. Most get killed, and those that survive are not the same.

Lets catch this bastard and let him rot in hell where he belongs.

All this attention because it's been done on youtube and facebook. I'm so torn because **** like this asshole has been doing has been going on for such a long time and it didn't explode all over the internet. Yeah it's cool they're getting awareness and support, but the support shouldn't just be for this one guy. It should be for the groups like the ICC.

I also don't agree with how much propaganda they put into it but I guess it's just a means to a hopeful end. People are so outraged and upset, but the world is a ****ed up place and it has been for a LONG time.

It is too bad the guy who did this video didn't have another friend he met in Uganda named Edward, they would have easily had double the views at this point.

That was my reaction when a woman at work was talking about it. She was outraged that there hadn't been any media coverage and when I told her that he'd been doing it for nearly 30 years and there had been tons of media coverage her reaction was "well I hadn't heard anything about it". I seriously doubt that. More likely she just tuned out the bad news in Africa like most everyone else in the western world does. What is really tragic is that millions of people see this and they are upset and angry and want to do something and then they hit the "Like" button and they are going to sleep a little better because they will think they have done their part.

Please everyone, be aware that donating to this organization DOES NOT directly do anything. Invisible Children spends all the money making videos and running campaigns. All you are paying for is awareness.

Now awareness does translate into real support for the people making a difference, but personally I'd rather spend $30 on a foreign missionary, supporting a family, or the like RATHER THAN a super special "action kit".

No offense but wherever you got your facts from needs to look again. As a nonprofit yes they do have to show all of their donation usage. And yes, the majority of the donations were put into use for making that 30 minute video. However, they do still send aid with the donations. They are helping fund the surrounding government militaries in a way that they have the technology and training they need to help cature kony and prevent similar situations in the future, and they also have used donations to help keep these children safe, provide jobs, and help educate the children (all shown with examples in the video - building schools and employment options and the radio emergency system).

I am pretty sure on the news earlier they have recieved 13 million since they started, and a little over 3 million has actually been used in Africa.

That doesn't sit well with me. It doesn't take 10 million and 10 years to make a 30 minute video.

Hell the one video on youtube has 27 million hits after a couple days. If everyone who watched the video donated a dollar to something that would change the world not "make kony famous," we'd actually do some good.

On the network news they say that ICC took in 18.6 million in donations last year and sent only 3 million in aid to Africa. That seems piss poor to me. Unicef and the IRC put more then 80% of donations to direct services. Much better in my opinion. Frankly all these assholes that are developing child armies to fight their wars of territorial expansion need to be put in a very deep hole with ravenous wilder-beasts...

However, within the last week the youtube video has been viewed over 58,721,112 times (current as of this post). That ain't bad for getting the word out.

They're a BS org. Never been externally audited.

At this point Kony isn't in Uganda and his numbers are in the hundreds. As far as warlords with child soldiers go, he's pretty low on the list.

Also we already have 100 intelligence personnel working with the Ugandan government to find him.

Ok, let's back up a bit. Money going towards this group, whatever small the percentage might be, is going towards Uganda's government military, correct? The government's opposition is the rebel groups, of which this Kony guy was recruiting children to fight for, correct?

So wouldn't logic follow that if you are sending money to a group that is funding a military that is fighting against rebel groups that are made up of children soldiers (and following the cold, hard fact that in any war there will be casualties, and generally the lesser-equipped army in terms of both equipment and training take more casualties) that in essence you are supporting the killing of children soldiers? Not trying to be a jerk here, but this is the problem that we, as America, have. We don't see the big picture, we don't see things the whole way through.

TLDR; don't support this group, please. According to most sources I've read, the war in Uganda was a long and brutal one but it's finally over. Yes, this Kony guy needs to be on the receiving end of some justice, but kickstarting another war (with children's live on the line to boot) is not the way to do it. Besides, as stated above, most of the money donated doesn't even make it to the actual victims, it's greasing too many hands along the way.

Something that me and my friends are very upset about is the fact that when the guy called for help to the Government they refused to help because they had no reasons to send troops to Uganda, and after so many years he finally convinced the Government to send troops, they only sent small help. But in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran they have (or had) troops and no one called them there (but those countries just happen to be floating in oil and are filled with Lithium).
And I don't know if this is true but a friend of mine told me that the US Government accepted to send troops to Uganda to help capturing Kony, just a few days after in was announced that there was a lot of oil under Uganda's soil. If that is true they make me sick.

The United States is definitely invading people to steal their oil. Yep. We go in, take all the oil we want, and act like we are helping the people. That is why our gas prices and the cost of oil per barrel is so low right now. Because we don't have to pay for oil, we just steal all of it and fill up our oil reserves. I can't stand to think what will happen when we have to stop stealing the oil. Our gas prices may go over $2 per gallon.

Africa is a huge continent and rich in just about everything except money. Western countries as a rule try to stay out of African affairs for a lot of reasons but chief among them is that African countries don't want western countries meddling in African affairs because it smacks of colonialism and also the U.S had that whole "Black Hawk Down" experience. The entire Kony thing is overrated and sensationalist journalism and is years out of date as far as its message and didn't do anything except tug on some heart strings and make a whole lot of money for a couple of people that have failed to do much good with it. If you want something that will truly make you sick read up on Rwanda that was a case where the whole world sat back and watched as a genocide took place live on TV with the UN sitting there on the ground with orders not to do a damned thing.

The UN changed their policy so that they could intervene if something like what happened in Rwanda happened again, didn't they?
