So wildfires, ya about those

This is about 4-5 miles north of me right now...

Wildfire near Cle Elum burns two dozen structures | KING5.com Seattle

I am in south Ellensburg (its a very small city with nothing of note but the college....and the sweet rodeo) and there is the very real possibility that a few of my friends in north ellesburg will be evacuated during the night

the worst part, the wind it pushing it straight south

wildfire grew to 10x its size overnight (now burning around 27,000 acres), 0% contained nobody seems to know where exactly the fire line is i think because it is moving so fast.

the good news is it seems to have gone a little west overnight but i dont think Ellensburg is out of the woods yet, we can still smell the smoke from our appartment

My suggestion if it seems possible you will have to evacuate, If you have room in a car or something, load up non-replaceable valuables. Such as pictures and other sentimental valuables(Bibles, heirlooms, etc...)

Being in the fire service, this is what most people care the most about, yet it is never on their mind to get when SHTF.

On one fire I worked we had no chance of saving the house, but upon entry I found a Bible in the bedroom. The woman got her cell phone, money, and car keys out of the house(the important stuff). When she saw me bringing it out to her she started bawling.I think it ended up being her fathers, fathers bible. Something like that is PRICELESS.

We are in the middle of the city, it would pretty much have to burn down all of Ellensburg to get to us. right now it is about 5 miles from city limits but the further it goes the more roads and irrigation ditches it will have to cross

The thing is it grew so fast overnight that firefighters have really not even started trying to battle it besides some choppers dumping water on it. They are still gathering firefighters from around the state and drawing up plans. doesnt help that the wind is still pushing it along at a pretty good clip

here is the last image i pulled from google earth with the USDA fire detection program overlay

i've always been interested in how they contain something like that. I know in some cases they get earth movers and start clearing land in the direction they hope it will move. do roads and things like that stop it? i imagine if it's windy enough, it just crosses them pretty easily

roads are usually a good block but it has already jumped interstate 90 which is 2 lanes either way, already jumped the Yakima river which is pretty wide as well. Ellensburg is known for its wind we have quite a large wind farm out here to generate power but that is not helping fight this at all. We have had a very dry 2 months leading up to this.

its burned down 60-80 houses already and its only been going for 24 hours. i doubt the city will be affected but there are lots of people that live out of the city limits

If you pray, it would be helpfull. One nice thing is the city really has come together, everyone is offering aid to get the victims out but even still, that doesnt stop the fire

Fire breaks work, but they can easily be jumped. Especially if they do not make it right/right conditions. More extreme measures is burning the area before the fire gets there, this is the BEST thing to do IMO. However, it can be dangerous and here in Ky I think only one or two people can make that decision to do it. So it only happens in extreme situations. Thankfully, our forestry service takes care of all forest fires. We only have to watch to make sure houses do not catch on fire.

Fire breaks can be made by dozers plowing through the land, or the sucky way a bunch of people walking through there with rakes, leaf blowers, and chain saws etc...

Also, they say in some places in the world, fire has jumped over 5 miles. Which seems ridiculous, but that's what the instructors tell people and they know more than I do.

theres no way our place will get hit, just an update, its now burned 22k acers but is headed up towards the hills which is away from populated kittitas county, they have a few planes and a Canadian air tanker (747 i think, jet powered for sure) making drops on the fire.

the good news is they say it is 25% contained, 900 firefighters working on it.

the bad news is they are saying there are so many hot spots that even if the fires stop spreading we will most likely have to deal with the smoke and poor air quality until winter.

that and the next few days are supposed to be very hot and dry followed by lightning

The community has really come together though, 2 days ago my gf and I went to the Holiday in to donate some of our time, they were collecting clothing and essentials for the families who have had their houses burned down, they were expecting a few boxes of donations and were asking for a few people to help sort it all, they got 3+ rooms full of donations and about 50 people to help sort it all out. we were really impressed

the firefighters have a wall (about 20 feet long) stacked full of donated water and gateraid and there has been a giant bbq the last few nights to feed the people who have lost their house on campus (they are staying in one of the dorms)
