Protesters vandalize 9/11 memorial

Okay, this is just sick...................

Another shining example of "patriotic dissent" :

From the Whittier Daily News (CA)

Antiwar protesters trash 9/11 memorial
American flags burned and slashed
By Debbie Pfeiffer Trunnell
Staff Writer

Monday, March 10, 2003 -

LA HABRA -- Antiwar protesters burned and ripped up flags, flowers and patriotic signs at a Sept. 11 memorial that residents erected on a fence along Whittier Boulevard days after the terrorist attacks in 2001 and have maintained ever since.

However, although officers witnessed the vandalism Saturday afternoon, police did not arrest three people seen damaging the display because they were "exercising the same freedom of speech that the people who put up the flags were,' La Habra Police Capt. John Rees said Monday.

"For this to be vandalism, there had to be an ill-will intent,' he said.

Rees said in order for police to take any action, the owner of the fence would have to file a complaint.

Jeff Collison, owner of The RV Center in La Habra, who has allowed residents to add patriotic symbols to the fence on his property, said he just might do that.

"Their free speech stops at destruction of private property. If they are allowed to come on my property and burn flags, does that mean I can go to City Hall or the police station and light their flags on fire because that is freedom of speech? To me, this is vandalism,' Collison said.

Some residents Monday hung signs criticizing those who destroyed the display.

Tracey Chandler, a Whittier mother of four who has maintained the spontaneous memorial since it was created by other area residents soon after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, said she was shocked by the destruction.

"They trashed 87 flags, ripped 11 memorial tiles made by myself and my children out of the ground and glued the Bob Dylan song to a sign that said, 'America, land of the brave, home of the free,' ' she said.

The Bob Dylan song she referred to is "With God on Our Side,' an antiwar anthem of the 1960s.

"It's unbelievable, because there were absolutely no political messages on this fence. It was all about supporting our troops, which could mean bringing them home, and about remembering 9-11.'

Les Howard, a sociology professor at Whittier College, said the incident might be an indication of some confusion among people trying to stop a possible war against Iraq but uncertain how to ******* their sentiments. However, he said he does not condone the destruction of symbols important to those who erect them.

"Some think (the best way to support the troops) is to not question their role. Some think the best way is to pursue all means possible to avoid putting them in danger,' he said. "That still does not excuse any desecration of people's symbolic participation.'

Chandler said she plans to rebuild the Sept. 11 memorial.

"We are going to rebuild this memorial, and it will be brighter, bigger and better than ever,' Chandler said.

These were anti-war protesters? I thought they were anti-war, not anti-American. These people who died on 9/11 were mostly civilians!

I would like to know what the hell this world is coming to. That is just absolutely sick how someone could do a thing like that. And I can't believe the First Amendment was brought in as a scapegoat to this extent. It's supposed to apply to only peacable protest! Jebus Shist!

Yeah, well. Ignorant dicks like this give the anti-war movement a bad name. Please don't assume that all pacifists are this inconsitterite.

As far as the police taking action- I have to stand by the official release- but I also suggest that the guy file a complaint.

On the other hand, I have to point out the flaw in the "think of our troops over there, risking their lives" mentality. If you love them so much, then don't send our country off to war. If you support the war, you are jointly responsible for the deaths of our soldiers. I, however, am not.

Thumbs up

That pisses me off even more than usual because it A) was a memorial for the victims of 9/11, NOT anything related to the war on Iraq and B) because I lost two uncles in the WTC- one as a firefighter, the other as an employee of Cantor-Fitzgerald.

If I wouldn't have gotten surgery this morning and be numb all over, I'd drive over to California and exercise some vigilante justice of my own. I don't care what happens to me- you don't disrespect the dead and fallen heroes of this country no matter if we are at peace or at war.

Now I'm reaaaaaaaally pissed....oooooh, this was just not the time I needed to read stuff like this

Now you know how the terrorists feel. I'm not trying to pep talk you- but you said it yourself. "I don't care what happens to me."

It in no way vindicates them, but maybe it will help you to understand them. Shakespeare put situational malice best when he wrote, "I do believe, induced by potent cir***stances, that thou art mine enemy."

It's not wrong to feel malice for these people- that's beyond your control. It would be wrong, though, to act on it. You know that- and that's why it's imperative not to wage wars based on revenge. If it's alright to seek vengance, then the 9-11 atrocities and all future wars as a result of it are instantly justified. But it's not.

Sorry if this is dangerously off-topic, but I think it's important to challange people's notions about revenge. One politician burning for revenge will achieve nothing. An entire nation, however, is more dangerous than any army.

Comparing to how the terrorists feel? I don't know. The difference is, is that those idiots who vandalized the memorial, were citizens of the United States. Man, where were the the human rights people at when Saddam gased the Kurds?

No, not at all Shytkicker- I see your point very clearly and it makes complete sense. I think I was just pretty hot-headed once I read the story because it defaces my uncle as well as all the other heroes that died for a cause that cannot be disputed- trying to save lives while discarding any care about their own.

That's not what the terrorists feel, however- they see the shedding of innocent blood as the mark of a hero. If anything, I hope that I can't think like them because if I ever get to that point I'll be a terrorist myself. And as far as I know, I hate terrorists to the fullest extent because they relish in killing others as a means of *******ing their ideas with no regard for the precious thing that is human life.

I'm not saying that my seeking revenge is right- by no means is it. But some things are beyond forgiveness, no matter what excuse (I say excuse since there is no possible REASON) for doing this.
