biology help

Suggest the effect of placing 8 ml of starch solution along with 2 ml of saliva in a dialysis membrane immersed in water

alright.. so the saliva has amylase.. which is an enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates into simple sugars or momsacchrides... and starch is a carbohydrate.. so the amylase breaks it down to glucose....

but then the water part.. is the water gonna diffuse into the membrane.. or is the starch/saliva gonna diffuse out,...

i think the water is gonna go in.. so is that gonna dilute the saliva? or?

anyone?

also, what is the affect of putting hydrochloric acid into a saliva and starch mixture... while the effect is the enzyme amylase never broke down the starch, but i need to use the terms and all that crap.. and i dont know exactly what the acid does to it.. i jsut know that it stops the reaction

the dialysis membrane is selectively permeable so only certain sized molecules will fit through. And i am 99.9% sure that water will diffuse into your membrane. I did a lab very similar to taht back in november, but i remember we took the mass of the bag before we put it in water and after, and it gained weight

so will the membrane burst? or just dilute the solution?

it will difuse in until they have reached equilibrium, right?

ya, all cell membranes let water in and out because H2O is such a small molecule. And it will become equally spread out, the saliva breaks down the starch into monosacharides (thats why if you chew a potato for long enough you get that sweet taste) and since the membrane is selectively permeable it will let the broken down starch through(which is now a sugar), so after a while it will reach equilibrium. But if you didnt have the saliva, the water would go into the membrane because it is seeking equilibrium, and eventually the membrane would expand and expand until all the water went into it, that or it would just burst.
