My Doom 3 review

Well I played this game at my friends house earlier, and im so enthusiastic about it, i thought id write a review, so here you go:

Rumors of Doom 3 have been going on for ages, and finally, this masterpiece has been unleashed. Taking place in the year 2145, you are a marine assigned to security of a research facility located on mars. The beginning of the game helps get you used to using your PDA and other controls and such. It also gives you time to explore and look at the amazing environment and detail put into these maps. The graphics are amazing, that top todayís super graphics games. While you simply watch a door or an airlock open, you will notice how life like and amazing these graphics are, with flawless animations. The environments feel truly used, as if people have been in and out of the rooms and sitting in the same chairs for years. The flashlight truly shows off how amazing the lighting is, slowly swaying back and forth casting shadows as light seeps through dark holes and crevices, and particles of dust and other junk float through the beam of light you project. When the game first started i could already tell it would be fantastic. The graphics are unbelievable, and the shadows and lighting are astounding. The action starts VERY fast, similar to the disaster in Black Mesa from Half Life. Everything is hit by a massive blast and your comrades are suddenly mindless zombies. The game play is very careful, and not something you can rush through at all. After all the hell, every room is its own new nightmare, and thereís a surprise with every step you take. The environments are fully interactable, very often you will hear something nock a thing off of a table or desk. And very often you will do the same, jump, turn around quickly and notice that it was only a coffee mug, turn back around and see a zombie creeping towards you. Walking down steamed halls hearing distant screams from the crews last survivors will truly scare the crap out of you. The sounds are fantastic, creating an amazing ambience with everything. They also can drive you to quickly panic, when hearing the footsteps of someone, or something, in a dark room not knowing where its coming from. As you adventure the story slowly unfolds piece by piece as you read journals, messages and voice recordings of researchers aware of what was happening. Playing the game truly takes a toll on your nerves, even in moments of safety, youíll still refuse to let your guard down, feeling a constant fear, and youíll never feel any confidence. Doom 3 is truly an astounding game, youíll never find a second of boredom, and youíll always be on the edge of your seat. Surround sound would definitely make the game way cooler, but we didnít have it. Just sit down turn off all the lights and prepare to completely crap your pants. D3 has raised the bar on first person shooters, and is sure to become the newest next generation shooter.

In short, its amazing. buy it, play it, and donít wear your favorite pants while doing so.

if your computer could handle the high settings its definetely worth it, i downloaded it, and my computer's video card blows so i dont get enough out of the game as i could. other than that, the game is REALLY fun. its like half life, or more like blue shift or opposing force. id say more blue shift. but still, the game took 6 years to make? besides the new 3d engine and graphics, the game isnt THAT much special. its just like half life but with good graphics and more interaction. theres not that much interaction btw.

I heard it that while you don't get the "uber 1337 grafix" of having a souped up comp, it runs pretty smooth with a Geforce3...Not sure memory-wise, but those are usually the two things that kill games today since most games will work with the common processors out there.

Also to get a brand new comp custom built that works pretty nice, ask around local shops...My bro got a pretty sweet comp made for $500 that could easily run from a manufacturer for $750+ plus his came with a Flat Screen monitor.

my dad had a comp built for 1500 that was custom made and i belive is pretty good, but i dont know the specs on it. i have to pic up my comp from being repaired tomorrow or so, and i might ask how much he thinks it would cost extra to have my dads be able to run some of the games like doom3. i hope its not that much. i might also ask how much it would cost for mine to be. but mine would be a LOT more.

you cant run doom 3 with a geforce 3... i have a ****ty geforce 4 and it runs like ****. the rest of my computer meets the ultra-quality requirements, EXCEPT the video card, which brought it to the low quality, where it still sucks.

I've heard from numerous people who have played it on their Geforce3's but like I said, everything was major low with probably giant resolution.

seriously, the game unfolds in a style remeniciant to Half life, but it is FAR scarier. The graphics are amazing, and you wont get it until you play it, and walk through a dusty cargo room with only a flashlight.. There is a ton of interaction, not the interaction youll see in red faction blowing tunnels through mountains, but you can knock things off of desks when you brush up into them, and so can your enemies.

It says Geforce4 it must be Ultra-h43x0rz good!

I accept the fact my card sucks, but i didn't wanna wait, so me and my bro picked this up and got home around 1:30...And I must say it's the shiz. The only thing I don't like is when you scroll to cjhange weapons it's inverted from CS, which I'm used to, so it's pretty annoying....Other than that Im running 800x600 Low setting's on an MX420, and atleast it's pretty playable...

we used the buttons to change weapons, since we found our selves changing weapons constantly, it was much faster...

My review sums up D3 nicely: "Resident Evil in FPS form, but with better graphics and more interaction."

I'm hooked.

I read that the enemy AI in the game is not very good here .

This kind of AI isn't hard unless you there are a lot of enemies on screen at the same time. Most of the time, the upper number of enemies is four. There were some times when I found myself fighting more creepy crawlies than that, but for the most part, enemies are incredibly easy to deal with so far.

I'm hoping that as I get farther into the game, enemies increase in brain capacity and start creating a more interesting combat experience. I still have a long ways to go, so that's entirely possible. As it is right now, combat is getting a bit repetitive. Situations are varied, but once enemies are on the screen, it's a pretty normal shooter experience where you never have to worry about your enemy switching tactics.
can any of you guys who have played the game comment on this? also is it annoying to be constantly switching betweent the flashlight and weapons?

I'll agree that the enemies "charge at you" but there are usually many objects in the game that they either hid behind, or go behind for a second then come out at you...you really have to play to get the feel for the AI...As for the weapon/Flashlight, it's very easy. You move with the "WASD" keys so it's very easy to hit F(switches to flashlight) and then if an enemy pops up hit F again and it will take you back to the last weapon you used. Also for some reason if you don't like that, the falashlight is set in the same bar as the weapons so you can scroll to it.
