Just go with the specs from Doom 3.

I would recommend:
at LEAST 3.0 p4 , AMD 64 would be ideal
at LEAST ATI 9600
at LEAST 512k (1gb if possible)

well you dont NEED 1 gb, I only have 512 but it can't hurt. Yeah I dont know much about HL2, ask pr0phet though, I'm sure he can answer your question better.

1 gig is a easy upgrade...which will give u good results.

Radeon 9800 pro...if u cant afford it save up for it...there is no point in buying anything less.

dont get a AMD 64...there is still no offical windows operating system for it...and no game usues 64 bits yet...and by the time they do...u can get the AMD 64 for a heck of alot cheaper....plus they require a different mobo and u said u already ordered one...so ur kinda screwed. wat kind of mother board did u get....pentium or amd

If you got a amd get a 3200...if u got a pentium...get at least a 2.8 ghz.

you will then be set for hl2 and doom3

ya i think in the end it will even out.

Doom3 has better textures from what i have seen...and not to mention the amazing real time shadow work that Half life 2 wont have...

however half life 2 will have much bigger (out door) enviornments. so it will probably be around the same requirements

The good thing is, is that i have not ordered anything else yet. Besides, my mobo will work with my processor. Trust me, i checked. I am getting an athalon xp, so it all good. Havent ordered anything else yet, so im fine. Besides, i know how to make games work on crap computers. My comp now has a celeron 1.1, 128mb or sdram ram, and a 40 gig HD. I managed to run GTA 3 and KOTOR on it. Though it lagged like hell. I will make it work .

Don't go with an Athlon XP, if you must go with the lower end Athlon XP line, go with a barton. They're cheap and they'll work on the best AMD mobos out there (A7N8X, NFS-7)...plus you get a better processor for your buck. If you really wanna go out, you could pick up an A64 rig for CHEAP...A64s are only about $147 for the 2800+, and the motherboards are about the same price as any other high-end mobo...onlly problem I see in that is you would need hella good/fast RAM, which is hard to find these days with a good CAS latency...so that could be a problem. Which leads me to another point, don't skimp on your RAM, if you do, God will come down from heaven and punch you in the face for being retarded. Get at LEAST 512, although I reccommend 1024, because all the new games (HL2, Doom3, and their mods) will all require massive amounts of RAM to run smoothly. Also, if you have the money, check out SATA hard drives, those will help seek times, and they are just all around better than normal hard drives. If you can, get 2 of em (The 74GB WD Raptors) and RAID them together...super good stuff there. And MAKE SURE to get a good case with good airflow..if you're a gamer, that's the most important thing out there. YOu need the airflow for intense gaming sessions, cuz if you don't have good airflow, you risk running components to their overheating points, and that's never good. Lastly, get a good NAME BRAND (Sparkle, Antec, Enermax) power supply. Don't skimp on the wattage either. I'd reccommend an Antec TruPower 380 at least, and that'll cost ya a pretty penny. Hope I kinda helped.

um there is no secret lol...all games will start even if you have the ****tiest computer...it just matters on your operating system....then it will just lag like ****.

actually they are mostly the same price as a normal hard drive...only difference is you need a mobo that will support SATA...which only new mobos have them...and not even all the new ones do.

One this is for sure that SATA is a heck of alot faster. I noticed a huge difference when copying large files from one place to the other...also for certain game loading times.

haha ya....i got 5 fans 3 blowing in and 2 blowing out. Make sure to think abotu where the air will be flowing and blowing when u install the fans. You want the air to flow over parts like your processor and graphics card...and you want it to go out at the opposite side of where the air is taken in...so air is constantly circulating.

The pre installed fans where messed up and some where blwoing in and some where out...wheni switched them around and fixed them the mobo temp went from 79*F to 74 *F...which is actually a big difference. No wonder my room is so warm when i have my comptuer on lol.

Also I would suggest a larger case....i just think that would be better for heat then a small cramp case.

Just make sure if your making a gaming computer not to use the stock dell cases that have 2 fans...I have 5 and the thing still gets pretty hot.

Yeah, you're probably right on the SATA prices, I haven't checked them in a while, but when I saw them last they were pretty expensive :[

And back to cases, I suggest an Antec Sonata, or a LANboy or whatever, those both are AWESOME cases. A bit expensive though.

Nforce 2 mobo
Athlon XP 2500+ (AQXEA stepping) overclocked to 2.4ghz 400fsb
1 gig dual channel Samsung DDR400 Ram
MSI Geforce FX 5700 256mb 25%Core/memory overclock

I run Doom3 maxxed settings, flawless movement. You just gotta know how to tweak your system

lol no u dont run it on maxxed settings

the ultra graphics wont even work because you NEED a 512 mb graphics card. The textures are uncompressed...and take up 500 mb of space...so not all the textures even show up...

nice try...but no

Yes i am getting a barton 2800. Im getting 512 megs of crucial ram. a samsung 120 gig hd. im getting an aspire case, it only has two fans, but it will work fine. My uncle has the same thing. I overclock my celeron really bad, and it only has one fan.
I hate fedex. They said my case would be here today, but the idiots go out to one of my doors, which is always locked, and dont go around to the front where there are 2 other apartments, and a store below us. They are retarded.

lol...how are they idiots...normal houses only have 1 front door...not 2 lol

Your celeron was a cheap old chip...they wont gernate nearly as much heat as the new one u got....i doubt your celeron overclocked is as hot as your new AMD running normal.

You better get some special heat dispursing jell to put between ur processor and the prossesor heat sink if you plan on doing ANY overclocking...and i would be actually VERY worried abotu only 2 fans. I hope u got a temp guage on ur mobo so it knows when to shut down when u over heat.

I dont know. Ill find out when it gets hear. My case does have a temp gauge though. I agree with you flatliner, my celeron wont generate that much heat. But mine sucks so bad i prolly overclock it listening to music and web surfing at the same time. Mine comp now could barely run cs 1.5, whenever there was a big firefight it would freeze up. It wasnt my connnection because i got verizon dsl. I hate my computer.

Do you even know what overclocking is? Honestly?

Wow no. Overclocking is pushing the core speed of the processor beyond the set clock speed you got it from the factory at. You do this by upping multipliers, doing things to your FSB and dicking around in your BIOS. Not by listening to music and web surfing. That just puts a strain on your processor, running more information through the computer than was being run through before. Don't spew misinformation anymore please.

lol...i thought something was kinda fishy...but i could never put my finger on it.

Ya to overclock you need to go into your BIOS...which is different for every computer...but you hold down a button when the computer starts up and its a very plan screen comes up....it doesnt even use a operating system...it actually runs it from the processor and the ram...so it is very basic...

anyways...i would STRONGLY suggest you get sumone else to build/pick the components for your computer...it really sounds like you dont know to much...and you can easily buy the wrong components and/or install them incorrectly...

also starting up a new computer that doesnt have a operating system can be very troublsome....even for me when i had to install the new SATA drivers....i had to go onto another computer...find the files that where hiden away in the motherboard CD...put them on a floppy...then when isntalling windows xp...i had to put the disk in the computer when it was starting up...it took me about 2 hours to even figure out where the drivers where..cuz there where apsolutly no instructions on how to get a SATA setup working.

its potentially small thing liek that...that even if you have knowledge of computers and how they spicificly work...you can get hung up.

WRONG. GOD DAMNIT WHAT IS WTH THE MISINFORMATION?!

You only need a 512MB Graphics card to run Doom3 on ultra settins WITH UNCOMPRESSED TEXTURES!!! Good god, ****ing misinformation.

Nextly. Please please please have your cousin help you a LOT. Especially when it comes to placing the heatsink on the processor. If you don't do it right, you'll crack the core of the processor, effectively rendering it useless. Let me tell you right now, you're gonna have to use a flathead screwdriver, and be SURE it's stable when you're pushing down on it. If not, you'll have it flying out of your hand and taking things off of your motherboard, thereby rendering your motherboard useless.

When you start to push down on your heatsink, the motherboard should depress in the motherboard tray, and that's perfectly normal. You'll have an easy time getting the first heatsink clip on, but the second one is where all of this comes into play. Take that flathead screwdriver and push down onto the second bar of the heatsink, clipping it onto the motherboard.
