So as to not to sway you to one over the other I will not tell you for which company I work... Guess.
Every cellphone company is known for something... Here's a list of the good and bads that people should
Has "walkie-talkies" and very durable phones and they run off of GSM networks. Downs-
Has no coverage area what-so-ever and over-priced plans. Oh, and they charge you for your "standard" features.
Verizon Wireless: Ups-
Has some decent phones, but nothign special. They run off of digital networks. (I believe TDMA, but don't quote that.) Downs-
The prices for plans are horrid, as is the coverage.
AT&T Wireless: Ups-
Has the coverage of Cingular, very decent plans, and the ability for unlimited text-messaging. They also use GSM networks. Downs-
They were bought out by Cingular. Their customer service wait-time is horrid.
They have the most coverage of ANY cell-phone provider off of a GSM network. Downs-
They have "roll-over" minutes, which are useless... You can get a better plan for your money elsewhere, and their bills always overcharge. They are also the only company that charges 1 Anytime minute for sending or receiving a text-message.
Also GSM based. Have some of the more higher-end phones by default, have some of the best rate plans out. Their packages have NO roaming. Downs-
They have a limited service-area.
Sprint: Pros- Is known worldwide. They bought out Nextel and now have the "walkie-talkie" service. Their "Flex" plan is amazing. Downs- If you're a person without credit... You have Sprint.
As far as places like Altell and Rogers AT&T... I have no clue as I do not live in their service areas.
To sum it up... Go AT&T or Sprint. Sprint is good all around and AT&T has better price plans then Cingular, but AT&T now has Cingular's awesome coverage area due to the fact that they were bought out.
Now... Guess which one I work for.
