How to make an uber antenna on my roof.

I want to put a big AM/FM antenna on my roof. No more then 5 feet tall though. I think I'm going to mount it to the outside of my window, becuase there'd be no other place to do it, nd drilling into the roof isn't an option.

So yea, what would conduct well? Where could I get a lot of it? What kind of patterns would give me best reception.

I'm just tired of my antenna for my stereo.. Which is basicly a piece of a clothes hanger tied to a piece of stereo cable running form the stereo. IT only works when I sit near it. Weird, eh?

So yea.. What kind of metal, and what kind of shape?

I put it up.. And I tested before to find a station that came in fuzzy. Installed it on my roof (Or more like I wrapped it around a pipe thingy) and I get it crystal clear.

I took a clothes hanger, wrapped it with wire, and took the wire and attached it to a long speaker wire.. Then I covered the clothes hanger in PVC. Climbed on my roof adn threw it over...

I scratched my arm up coming back through my small window. Its just a small 3 inch by 2 inch scratch, but its swollen and red. Kinda burns.

Mission accomplished.

Making a longer antenna won't work or will only have a small effect. Usually devices like stereos only have enough receiving power for the antenna length that comes with the device, that is pretty much FCC regulated. In order to better reception you would need to boost the recieving power and make the antenna longer. (Longer isn't always better too, there are certain style antennas for certain wave lengths and the right style one will work better then one that is just longer) Your best option is to change where the device is or where the antenna is until you find a signal hotspot.

WEll, it works way better then my speaker wire. I needed a long ass wire so I could run it form my roof to the reciever.

So your saying that the antenna doesn't matter, but its more the position of the stereo?

If you put the device in a signal hotspot then you can fine tune the signal with the placement of the antenna. Where the whole device is is often more important then where just the antenna is. (In consumer devices that is, ham radios and such are a bit different)

I see... Well, the antenna is pretty close to the reciever I guess. Its like 4 feet above it on the roof.

i've got plans for an absolutely KILLER ham radio antenna. its called "the copper clopper" . it consists of 2 or 3 main loops made of copper tubing, then a couple of crosspeices and some pvc and waht not. havn't built it, but i know someone who has, and he got better reception with it down at ground level on a fence than he did with his 200 dollar antenna on a 50 foot antenna mount. only drawback to it at all is that it is not omnidirectional

I got a new system today and it took me about 20 mins to find a good spot in my room with my wire. I put it above my window, almost clear sound...just a tad bit fuzzing. I find that the best place that works is floating in the middle of your room.

Only problem is...

AM antennas i believe must be a coiled wire. FM's don't

go to radio shack, and get a few feet of antenna cord, that stuff works like a charm...

and like doomsday said, consumer products aren't gonna have as good of a reciveving power then other things. try to get the sterio and antenna in an open area away from trees. and on a high point such as a roof.
