exhaust flamethrower

my friend was telling me that if you can get your exhaust to come out as fire if you add a spark plug inside the exhaust. he said you attacha wire to it, and one is grounded to the frame and the other connects to the battery. so when the exhaust comes out it lights on fire. does anybody know if this actually works and how to do it. can it damage your car? i also heard that you can buy kits for it but i dont really want to do that, i would just like something fairly simple

To get that to work you'd be having to run WAY rich.

The better way to do it would probably be to hook up a seperate gas tank and electric fuel pump, run it out the back, then spark it.

Basicly it is like an after burner on a jet engine but no power advantages. people make flamethrower kits, its basically a spark plug at the end on the exaust pipe . You can run it rich but your engine will run poor. The common thing to do around here is run a seperate electric pump off the same fuel tank that you can switch on and off because in some places it is illegal to have. If you want to really get into it you can have a seperate tank and add chemicles or use a different liquid to get different colors(copper = green/blue, Potassium = purple, sodium = yellow

people with old cars (usually lowriders) can do this cuz their cars usually run rich as pigs. one guy in my old auto shop class (wasn't actually in the class, just hung around the shop all day) had an impala i think, and he had rigged up spark plugs in his tail pipe. apparently you rev the engine up, cut the ignition, then turn the ignition back on just before it completely dies, which sends a bunch of unused fuel down the pipes, then fire the plug in the exhaust
they were experimenting with the "buzzer" coils off of the old model a (t?) fords, basically doesn't just jump a small spark but has a constant arc of electricity, which makes it buzz.

if your car has any smog equipment or isn't an old, big v8 that runs hella rich, you're gonna have to buy a kit that injects fuel into the exhaust pipe

here i go to set you guys straight. the deal w/ exaust flamethrowers is this. you mount a spark plug and coil assembly to your exaust tip. the hot for the coil is run through a relay that is also connected to the power to the main coil and the starter. so when you press a little button w/ the engine running it turns off power to the main coil, and puts power on the coil feeding the exaust plug(s) and puts power to the starter. this allows the engine to turn over and expel the fuel/air mix into the exaust to be ignighted by the plug in the back. for extra flame a small propane tank, feedline and nozzle can also be fitted into your exaust pipe. this can only be done on vehicles that DO NOT have a catalitic converter. so if u think omg i can do this to my ricer, think again, you'll have to have ure cats. chopped off first(assuming they aren't chopped already). that is the best way to do it, it can be rigged without the relay and what not, but not with nearly the same effect. doing this will also recuire you to change your oil more frequently(dependent on how much you use us )
