Just went to the bank with my parents in an attempt to move the money into other accounts since the one I was in expired and was giving very little interest. Its a custodial account and I had to go home to get my ID. While I was gone they did everything and when I got back they told me all the money is still my parents(I guess until 21) but I know for a fact they are BS’ing me because the money should have been mine at 18. I’m terrified at what my parents are going to spend it on. its definitely gone. any chance the bank listened to my parents and helped them keep the money / am I ****ed? How would I go about finding out if they BSed me or not?

To be fair - he's 18 and finally getting responsibility and accountability to both manage and handle for himself. His behaviors are characteristic of someone in his age range and demographic - especially if the spoon he ate from was made of anything but Wood or Walmart building materials.

He's just turned 18-ish. The age where society says "you're a man" but reality says "your stones dropped 2 years ago..don't try to flex them just yet...cuz you never learned how to use them"

Based on prior conversations with him on the forum about similar ambitions and life-goals...he hasn't been receptive to the elders who have tried to push him in a direction he didn't wish to end up.

Ultimately he'll live, learn, and will end up in his mid 20's before he can look back on this situation and say to himself "I'm a ****ing idiot...and I shoulda just sucked it up..dealt with oppressive parents for 3 more months and went to school."

In thinking about this - I vaguely remember how much longer a month was... 10 years ago.. than it is now.

I remember summer vacation back in my grammar school years never seemed to end. That it was JUST long enough in middle school, never anywhere near long enough in high school - and non existent once you found out that menial jobs don't have summer vacations.

But - (most of the older guys will understand this...) Its going to be June in less than 10 days. How long ago was New Year's? Youth is wasted on the young.

Well now I feel old.
Welcome to the big-boys club...where life only knows how to continually accelerate....haha.

Nah - About 6-8 months ago (or was it years that felt like 6-8 months?) I sat back and thought about this.

Life and time is perceived in a window of 'known' measurement. If we could recall it - the first day we're on the planet - would be the longest day of our lives...as we have no idea just how long it goes.

From there -- project forward to age 5. Grocery shopping used to take forever. 80 day summer terms were eternally long - and the time between coming home from school and dinner time was a sufficient amount of time to go play. Then again - we'd only been alive 1825 days - and our perception of a day as a function of our time spectrum is 0.00054794. Nowhere near 1, but still fairly sizable.

Crank that to age 10. The number halves.
Crank that to age 20. The number quarters.

And that only continues to get smaller and smaller - making each day a speck on the spectrum, infinitely less and less valuable.

Comparing current time to being 5 - I used to have sufficient time to run around and play outside. Now I go for a 5 mile run after work, come home...do a 20 minute plate workout (circuit training...sorta)... and its dark, 8pm, and I've got enough time to shower, hydrate, crack a beer, check on my stuff at work, and dive into 2 LOL rounds before I'm between the sheets - waking up to do it all again the next day.

says who?

rules and laws change, even if they did tell you at some point it would be yours at 18 that doesnt mean squat unless it is in a contract.

when I was turning 21 I was going to be kicked off of my parents health insurance and was, had to find a job on my own to get my own health insurance, then once Obama came along with the healthcare reform the age got moved to 26 i think it was and I was able to get back onto my parents healthcare for another year or so at that point. this $50k or whatever it is is just like my healthcare, a gift from your parents and it should be seen as such

if you want 50k in an account that is all yours here is a tip for you

go make it

if anything your parents have more of a right to this money that you do anyway, they are the ones that put it in the account in the first place if i remember right

When it comes down to it - 50k is jack crap if you have no static income to back and support it.

Now - I realize these are Chicago based examples - but it will show you how far that $50k will get you.

*A 2 bedroom apt. in a more commercial area of the Chicago suburbs is ~1200/mo.
~14.5k/yr

*A cell phone is $100/mo
~1200/yr

*Car insurance below age 26 on a non-new car (full coverage) is $100/mo
~1200/yr

*Cable television with internet is about $100/mo
~1200/yr

*Food is $150-200/mo
~2400/yr

So - just with apt, food, insurance, cell, and internet - you're at $20,500/yr.

Factor in your mandatory car repairs and scheduled maintenance. Factor in electricity, gas, and power. Factor in clothing expense. Factor in upkeep on electronics and toys. Upkeep on cell phones. Upkeep on everything else... and you're probably at $35k/yr to retain a middle-class standard of living. Mind you - this assumes zero rainy day fund, and isn't taking into account the impulse expenditures and such.

And if you're a smoker? $10/pack..per day. $5200/yr. If you drink a case of beer a week -$1040/yr.

$50k in a bank account is about as useful as dogfood unless you have an income stream...or have one in the works.

Soooooo true. I get 3 vacation weeks a year. I'm about middle in the seniority pool at my job which is pretty good for the age of 24, but I still struggle to get time off during the summer this year. Oh summer vacations.

I haven't followed your threads on your situation but judging by the first reply by Mike, I say reread it a few times. I've seen trying times and done some pretty stupid ****. That's the truth.

That's likely a joint account. You may not have full control over it. You can likely now close that account and open up a new one with just yourself now that you're 18.
