98 Custom with unwanted burst fire issue.

I've about had it with this gun. I received it from my cousin a few years ago. Since then, I have replaced the power tube (was cracked) and the valve (leaking terribly). Ever since I replaced the valve, my gun will do this burst fire thing every 2 or 3 shots. Whenever this happens, one or two paintballs will either shoot out about 5 feet, or just fall out the end of the barrel. I am not low on CO2, because it happens with full tanks too. Also, I do not think that it is due to the sear and hammer being rounded off- they look square and fine to me. Everything in the gun has been liberally lubricated and cleaned. I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks,
Joe

I would guess you didn't get something quite right when you replaced the valve. It sounds like you don't have enough gas being sent back to the hammer to produce a complete cycle.

How's the o-ring on the hammer?

the o ring on the hammer seems to be alright....whenever it goes into the power tube, you can tell there is a tight fit. do you think it would be a spring that isn't quite as strong as need be?

Could be the main spring. Some kid brought in his 98 to get fixed, said it wouldn't shoot any air and after he cleaned it it wouldn't cock. The first was due to a near dead main spring and the second was from putting the bolt in backwards.

Try a new spring. :tup

alright then. thanks. perhaps i'll check online for a spring before i decide to give it to a shop to take a look at. so you really think that spring could be the difference?

I don't think it could be the problem, I know it could be the problem.

Notice the key word used above: "could"
I can't be 100% sure that a new spring will remedy your problem because I don't have the gun in front of me where I can look at it. Your problem could be caused by a few different things, a weak spring just happens to be one of them.

If you decide you want to replace the spring, figure out what it will cost and let me know. I may be able to give you a better deal.

well, i am willing to give it one more go. it appears that the cheapest i can find is a set of 5 springs (different strengths)

BT Spring Kit - 5 Springs [98]

with shipping, it would run me about $10. but the other thing is that i desperately need a new lens for my mask. and this site has the particular lens i am looking for. but i could do without it though. let me know what you think.

because like i said, i've replaced the valve, so i know that the chances of it being bad are slim to none. the power tube has been replaced too. sear and hammer are nicely squared. everything is cleaned and lubed, and looks fine to me.

its probably more consistent which is turning into better ball to ball accuracy but accuracy itself is determined by paint and barrel alone

since its old and has clearly been used quite a bit id suggest going though and doing a full rebuild, rebuild kits can gennerally be had for a few bucks and will come with all the o-rings you need. you can never tell if a o-ring is good or bad simply by looking at it (unless its cut that is) so if that hammer o ring was your issue you wouldnt have been able to tell unless you replaced it

glad to hear its working though
