my friend is changing an autococker to to a pump. is it worth running air through it or should he just run co2?

You could run either. But you can use a smaller CO2 tank and have more shots than a HPA tank of the same size. Plus the rate of fire doesn't effect the gas as much because it will be slower.

so basically he should just save his money get a small co2 tank, since it won't affect the consistency of his shots either way.

Oh sure you'll have some flex in velocity with the CO2. 3.5 Oz CO2's are really small and light. I use a 7 Oz with my pump.

On a side note, those small HPA tanks are slick. Costly, but slick none the less.
