Anyone setup a custom turbo on a car or helped/watched someone?

16g turbo, turbo manifold, front mount intercooler, boost gauge, manual boost controller, and gaskets

I'm getting all that for like $400. Once I get all my charge piping, intercooler piping, blow off valve, injectors and oil lines I can start getting everything ready to install.

My main concerns..

-Installing the charge piping
-Figuring something out for a downpipe
-ECU

For the ECU I'm thinking about just running a p28 with a burned basemap on it.

But yeah.. any help is appreciated.

Fyi, I'm only going to run 8psi to begin with. I might turn it up occasionally, but daily driven will be 8psi. And yes my stock block and head can handle it. Cast-Iron sleeves and low compression ftw.

Dont get one from a junkyard is my best advice. We turbo'd an escort over the summer for a project to do. The turbo only lasted like 2 months, and we had it at 8psi.

I'm not getting it from a junkyard.

Edit: It's actually a kit made for my engine. Not a custom rigged setup. A 16g is a good turbo too. Not any of that ssautocrap ebay bull****.

Word.

As long as it has little shaftplay it should last quite a while.

But yeah this 16g is like new.

the escort motors will only take about 5psi safely without major mods, thats why yours blew up IMO

Well on KCSR there are TONS of people who know about turbos. I'm just trying to get a little more general knowledge and what not.

Well you definatly have alot to learn from what im gathering. If you are unsure of what to run for a downpipe, i suggest just 3in and out the side or you can go 2.5/3 turbo back, either choice works. Charge piping isn't very hard at all, just get a piping kit, some silicone connectors and hose clamps. Also, what brand of kit is this? It must be used or something because a good 16g goes for 475+. I also wouldnt be so fast to judge SSAuto/XSpower/TurboXS. In their early days they made alot of junk, now days they have gotten their game together a bit more, they have EXCELLENT FMIC cores, their exhausts arent bad at all, and alot of people are starting to have awesome results with their manifolds, turbos, wastegates, and bovs. Im not sure about the f22 but a couple of my buddies that run b18bs always want me to find them 450cc stock dsm injectors, might look into that for a cheap source, i might have a set even

Well I just wasn't sure how the downpipe would work out. I figure I can just use the 16g flange and have a downpipe made and welded on my exhuast.

He just told me he paid a little over a grand for everything and really needs money. If I'm not mistaken, the turbo is brand new. I'll be sure to check for shaft play though.

Yeah, it isnt hard at all to make a downpipe, well i guess it depends on your setup and how much room you have to work with. You could probably pick up a 16g, get a dsm o2 housing, then bring it to a shop and ask them how much it would run you for a 3in o2 back exhaust. shouldnt be too bad depending on your muffler choice

shouldn't be too terribly difficult. Like disturbed said, take it to a shop, have them fabricate the pieces and weld them together. BTW, not to jack the thread, but disturbed, if you go with that setup in your sig, I'd step up to 990cc Injectors just for that little extra leeway they have over 880ccs, since you'll be tuning w/DSM link.

I get the kit sometime next week, so I'll get pictures and what not.

Next weekend or the weekend after I'll start getting the boost gauge where I want it and mounting the front mount.

Theres the kit. I told him I want to pick it up this weekend and I got $350 cash.

The 16g is BRAND NEW. Pretty sure the wastegate is too and he said it's setup for a j-pipe with an o2 sensor in the downpipe.

My only worry right now is a tune. Well piping will be a *****. As far as oil lines go, could I just get stock DSM lines and tap them into my oil pan?

Is that the whole "kit"?
You're still going to need:
water lines to and from turbo
Oil feed and return lines to and from turbo
Gaskets for the manifold
o2 housing
dp
injectors
fuel control of some sort (S-AFC)
and other misc **** such as IC piping and throttle body elbow.
You have your work cut out for you! That turbo is NOT brand new. A brand new turbo would cost more than the $350 the kit is going for. You're also going to have to spend 2x that much to get it to a point that's useable.
edit: are you sure that's even a MHI 16g? It should have TD05H casted on the housing. That one looks to say something different...
I attached a pic of a brand new MHI 16G that I bought for my 2G DSM way back in the day.

He paid a grand for it. He's been trying to sell it for a while and just needs the money now.

I know I'm still going to need some stuff for it. It's not setup for an o2 housing it's setup for a j-pipe going down to the downpipe. I could pick up a 02 housing pretty cheap anyways.
