what is a ball detent and what does it do?

keeps your gun from double feeding

It puts the ball in place when it is in the breech.

It is screwed into the side of your gun (most likly the left side) it can be replaced for stiffer ones (for force feed hoppers). But yeah, it keeps you from double feeding.
