Hey everyone! I joined this forum because I need help surprising my boyfriend with some paintballs. We are both in college and live together. It's been hard to find fun stuff to do lately, and we've had a falling out with a group of friends we used to hang out with all the time. We've both been very bored and it's obvious it's affecting our relationship. We do a lot of online gaming, but he's always talked about wanting to get into paintball ever since we went to an indoor facility where we used to live. Now, we live near Cleveland TN where apparently there is a huge outdoor paintball facility he talks about wanting to check out.
The problem is he doesn't have anyone to go with him to paintball events, so even though I've been telling him to go ahead and buy the stuff and go alone (of course I'd tag along but I REALLY don't like getting hit with paintballs so I wouldn't play), it's hard to get him to have the incentive to just go DO IT.
I know he'd love it once he started, he wants to join the marines, he loves call of duty (he plays it obsessively) but that's beside the point.

I really wanted to know if I could buy paintballs that would just be generic for most guns. Once he takes on the sport he'll probably jump to buying a high-end quality gun, so I want to make sure if I surprise him with paintballs he'll be able to use them with whatever gun he decides to buy. I was going to get "Seconds Paintballs" (Amazon.com: Seconds Paintballs - 2000 Rounds: Sports & Outdoors) from amazon for $30, but I was afraid I'd get the wrong kind. I tried to do some googling to figure out barrel sizes and whatnot, but I figured I'd just try out a forum to get some direct answers. Also, if I buy these cheaper paintballs will these be usable in the guns you rent at paintball arenas(i guess you call them?)?

He'll probably get a sniping style gun, or maybe a high-power assault type. IDK but I need some guidance! lol I was hoping to get them in time for valentines day, so the sooner the better! :3 Thanks in advance <3

EDIT: after a little more googling i'm tempted to get diablo heat balls. Are these generic enough for what i'm looking for?

Seconds paintball's would do just fine. All paintballs should fit any gun unless they are marked .50 caliber. Some fields allow to Bring your own paintballs and some do not, check the place's website and see if it says FPO (field paint only) meaning you have to buy paintballs there or if it says BYOP (bring your own paint) selx explanatory

Most paintball markers are 68 caliber.

Seconds Paintballs are a great cheap alternative, but I wouldn't recommend them on the field. They're basically paintballs that didn't sell, and are second-time-around. They are usually covered in dimples and dents.

Diablo's are GREAT balls.

All paintball marker barrels for .68 caliber guns fit .68 caliber rounds.

Almost EVERY marker on the market is .68 caliber, ALL markers you rent on the field are .68 caliber.

In my opinion, the best balls you can get are Marballizer's. They're expensive, but they're premium quality, and everyone I play with loves them.
Amazon.com: PMI Marballizer Paintballs - 2000 Rounds - Green/Clear Shell - Green Fill: Sports & Outdoors

However, most fields provide all-day paint and air when you rent the field to go paintballing, buying balls almost isn't necessary unless you want to bring your own premium paint, like said Marballizer's.

"He'll probably get a sniping style gun, or maybe a high-power assault type. IDK but I need some guidance! lol I was hoping to get them in time for valentines day, so the sooner the better! :3 Thanks in advance <3"

ALSO- There is no such thing as a paintball-sniper set up, make sure to warn him about that. There are ways of getting a paintball marker to shoot longer distances, but for longer distances the ball simply doesn't brake, so it's useless. High-power assault types are looked down upon in actual games, because they're simply too heavy. If you have a crapload of attachments on your gun to make it look good, it really doesn't help the gun do what its job is- shoot a paintball accurately at a target.

I'm assuming your boyfriend is getting into Woodsball, which is in an outdoor woods field. Here's a great video for that-

Very good post, also make sure the field does allow you to bring your own paint as stated some indoor fields I know have certain specific "off days" usually during the week where they have lower amounts of people coming and they designate those as Bring Your Own Paint days. Diablo Heat is nice paint I actually just bought a case of white filled for an indoor field in my area that has byop days.

Secondly, why is it that I cant find any girls that are into paintball and video games! =(

Insane Paintball
That's the place 15 minutes from me. From what I can tell, they give you options as to whether you want to pay to rent everything or bring some things yourself. I just finished getting him 500 diablo heat balls and a VFORCE Armor Paintball Goggle Mask Gen 2 (it was cheap, and looked like the best on amazon for the price-range.. please don't tell me I got something crappy!!!).. from what I can tell that means he'll be able to go there any friday, saturday or sunday for $25 (field feee+gun rental, meaning if he buys a gun it will only be $15) which is affordable on our Olive Garden tip wages >_< (Plus there is cosmic paintball HELLO he's going to love that!) haha

@bandit, he sort of got me started on video games when I saw a commercial for kingdom hearts, so he got it for me to play on my brother's playstation 2. After I beat it, I was hooked on the playstation.. I played a bunch of final fantasy games, okami, eternal sonata-- and other girly stuff, lol. Then we had to have a long distance relationship for four years, so I played Socom II online with him until Final Fantasy online came out. We played that together for about three years, then switched over to world of warcraft, now we are back together and we still play it on occasion, but WoW kind of lost its pazzaz during the Burning Crusade expansion. (now I really sound like a nerd). Really the only reason I like video games is because it gives us something to do together. I don't know why more girls don't get into it-- they always ***** at their guys for playing them and never try to make it something to do together. :p

Thanks again everyone ^_^

now I just have to figure out a way to convince him to buy me another hdtv for the bedroom so I can play my xbox or watch TV when I want instead of watching him play call of duty. hopefully using this gift as blackmail this will suffice :3

Just some alternative thoughts to consider.

Instead of paintballs how about a gift certificate for a day of paintball.

Invite him on a "date" and take him to the paintball field.

Or some combination of all the above.

Just a note, take a good book if you read, and the charger or car adapter for a portable game system, knitting etc if you are so inclined, it could be a long day and paintball fields are not known for having much to do for those who are not invlolved in the games.

This is not true. Lots of the talk on .50 cal were to save the field money and cleaning and all that BS. Some fields have fallen into the hype and switched.
Im not sure how many fields have completely downgraded, but im sure that some fields thought 50 cal would catch on and completely changed their arsenals.
