My new Corolla needs some new system shizzle in it. I've come to you for help, pbf.

It has the toyota 6disc head unit, which i want to keep. i dont want to get a new head unit because this one is really nice and i consider buying a new one a waste of money.

it has 2 6.5" speakers in front, and 2 6x9" in back, with little 1" things on the upper door adjacent to the windshield.

What i wanna do:

1. Get a sub, 10" or 12" doesnt matter, something that hits well but wont take up much space at alll in my trunk, cuz i need/want trunk space.

2. Speakers that are loud n clear.

3. Ill be using the stock speaker grills so as to not invite thieves to take my system.

4. i want inexpensive, but bang for my buck.

5. my friend that installs caraudio at circuit city told me id have to replace the head unit otherwise ill need converters for the new speakers, which results in sound quality loss......thoughts?

6. i know ill need amps....again, just whatever fits the speakers i want, and works with the head unit i have, again, its a factory head unit from toyota.

thanks.....anyone who helps gets a free shirtless signed poster from me...<3

no signed poster, but if the stock head unit has rca's there is no quality loss. If anything, they make the converters where you cut into your left and right (rear?) speaker wires and install that to have rcas and keep your speakers. For a sub id recommend a 10'' sub for maximum hit. Go with a jl audio, kenwood exelon, or an alpine type r. If you get a type r go with a 12'' because they recover and hit like 10''. The only thing the rca converter does is rob wattage to your speakers, no quality loss (unless you blow at wiring, lol). ALWAYS USE SOLDER TO CONNECT MAJOR WIRES!!! connect the wires behind the dash with solder to insure a good connection. Do not solder your wires to your amp terminals (my friend did that)

you'd have to take it out and take a look.. you'll need to take it out to install a system anyways.. rca's are basically like the audio cables if you're hooking up an xbox or ps2 to a tv.. they'd be white and red. i'd think newer cars like yours would have them, my cousins trailblazer does, but i cant be 100% sure

amps, i'd go with kenwood, pioneer, alpine, or rockford fosgate

subs, kenwood excelon, alpine type-r or x, higher quality audiobahns (not ebay like) jl audio, or rockford

door speakers and 6x9's i'd go with alpine kenwood or pioneer

i know you dont want a head unit, but if you do look at them look for alpines or kenwoods unless you can get a GREAT deal on something similar..

subs and amps i'd go with either jl, kicker, rockford or alpine, u can find a nice set up for cheap if u ebay it, jus be careful...As for components i'd go either rockford or alpine (a little more expensive than kenwood, pioneer, etc. but u wont be disappointed) and definately get a new set of tweeters (the little 1" things)...Also DONT GO CHEAP ON THE WIRING, There is a big difference between walmart wiring and rockford wiring, it'll cost ya more but its a lot better in the long run, i only use rockford and swear by it...I hope this was a help

My cousins system in his car is pretty much all JL audio. He has a Pioneer head unit, JL tweeters, 2 12 inch JL w6 subs in a custom box, and 2 500 watt amps. I don't know what his mid-range speakers are though...I think Pioneer but I'm not 100% sure. Anywho, how he has his system set up it sounds great. The bass is hard, but doesn't overpower the highs and mids and all the sound is very clean.

Not true at all. Speaker wire is speaker wire, but when it comes to RCA cables, that's what makes the difference. When I had the cougar and the talon, they both had scosche wiring kits in them, with R/F RCAs. IMO, sounded just the same as my buddies 78 bonneville, and he had spend 125 on a fosgate wiring kit. I spent 25 bucks for my kit, plus cost for R/F RCAs, and I was happy with the sound I got.

Well, either way, you're gonna have to get an amp wiring kit of some sort to hook up the sub and amp. You don't have to re-wire if you are just buying a headunit, but you do need an amp wiring kit for the sub and amp.

if your stock head unit has rca hookups then all you gotta do is basically connect the remote wire, plug in the rca's and you'll be fine after everything else is hooked up, if there is no rca's you'll need to hook up all the wires for a new head unit and all and then plug in the rca's and connect the remote wire.

so if my non-RCA head unit is to be replaced by an RCA head unit....do i have to get new wiring?

You can go to wally world, or any car parts place and get adapters that wont screw your wiring up in your car (ie cutting and splicing.) I have a 2000w DHD amp that puts out 700 true rms and it cost alot less than others. The only prob I have is I bought sony subs and they suck under pressure. Go with the type r's for subs and either a DHD or a jl amp. If you have to replace you head unit I would suggest a clarion deck.

I wouldn't get a kenwood, pioneer, or RF amp. Kenwood and pioneer are your Wal Mart or Sears brand radios and RF doesnt make their inexpensive products very good. They put more quality into higher end audio.

sorry.. i have to disagree... my kenwood 1700 watt mono isnt a wal mart amp and dropped me 300$, and you're right.. i should have put the higher quality RF stuff... the comparable RF amp to my kenwood would have dropped me 500$, and i was thinking about it, but i love my kenwood amp.. i'll take pics quick brb
