My car keeps stalling while Im driving. It's an automatic, 1990 subaru legacy. I'll be driving and all of the sudden the engine just turns off but everything else is still on and good. I just have to pop it in neutral, off, on, back in drive, but sometimes it's sketchy like in the city or when its raining. Plus I lose power steering.

It seems to happen after I make turns usually. But has happened on straight driving and at an intersection. I thought maybe it starts revving to low, but that doesnt make sense for when it happens and im driving down the road.

Some one suggested it might be a problem with the grounding. And another said it like is that its revving too low..

any guesses? (besides the fact that its ****ing old)

does it jolt at all and then just kind of die out? (only reason i ask is because mine did it, and i havent found the problem yet.. it just kind of fixed itself..)

i'd suggest maybe getting your distributor looked at (wires/coil/etc.) check spark plugs, look around for any frayed or crappy wires, blown fuses, and yes, even grounds. not in that order either.. in fact i'd get the distro checked out last.

My mom's car does it to.

Most likely its the plugs and wires or the dizzy. But it could also be just a blown fuse or loose ground wire. New plugs and wires should be cheap and easy to put on your car.

check your EGA valve. this controlls the air/fuel mixture and after a long time, it get blocked up with carbon buildup.

then it's stuck open or closed and cause your motor to stall for obvious reasons.
the autostore will tell you to buy a new one, but all you gotta do is unbolt it from your intake manifold, and let some parts cleaner or gasoline sit in it. swich it around fro a while and let it sit. make sure the valve moves freely before you bolt it back.

Change your fuel filter and air filter first, if that don't work than move to the EGA, if not that then move to the electrical stuff. Does it have a distributor and wires or is it coil on plug? A lot of stuff from the early 90's has multiple distributors/C-O-P setup that if it goes bad shouldn't stall the engine out, but it will make it run like crap. Unless, of course, all of them go bad.

idle control unit? very expensive if broken....i hope it isnt that...
Doubt it's that. Most likely it's something pretty simple and common, like battery, plugs and wires, dizzy, etc. thumup:

the guys at subaru figured it was a ground and admitted theyd have no idea where to even start looking.. and i dont have the money to let em spend the time looking.. so I'll have to live with it for a bit.
