changing a .gif to a .jpg wont do anything. quality will stay te same.
Actually, the quality gets WORSE every time you convert from one format to the other.

The problem is 2 parts:

JPGs will always make the graphic worse every time you save it. This is because the compression algorithm is "lossy". This means it does NOT try to preserve the original, and instead sacrifices detail to make the file smaller.

GIFs are NOT lossy. They use an algorithm similar to ZIP. SO, every time you save it, the detail is the same.
BUT, the problem is that GIFS only use 256 colors, while the JPG uses millions.

SO, if you convert from JPG to GIF, you will loose color detail. If you convert from GIF to JPG, you will likely loose fine-line detail.

This is why its a good idea to store MASTER graphics as BMPs or IFFs. There are lossless, and 24bit. The only problem is that they are massive, so not sutable for publishing on websites.

Anyway......
FOr converting files: Get "Irfanview" from download.com . It is fast, and very easy, and spam-free
