You might want to make sure your drive reads the type of cds your trying to use (some cd readers wont read CD-R or CD-RWs). Or you should make sure your drivers are installed. Also make sure all the wires are hooked up.

All posts here are decent.. Should give you some help.

However, if they don't: Explain your problem.. What's goin' on, is it not even reading through the manual way, (My Computer > Open). The more you talk, describe etc, the better help you can recieve.

yes, it could be that the lazer has burned out or there is something else that is broken within it. if so dont try to fix it, just properly dispose of it(recycle?) because CD players are like $30 and are easy to put in.
before you go and rip the sucker out though you should check a few things. first check that it isnt just the autoplay crap(in which case you might have to contact M$ and/or reinstall windows). Then...

GROUND YOURSELF BY TOUCHING THE METAL CASE. DONT SHUFFLEE YOUR FEET WHILE DOING THE BELLOW. OR ELSE YOUR COMPUTER WILL FRY.

open 'er up and check that the cables are hooked up. there should be two one for power and one SATA or ATA(or possibly scuzzie)...anyway the power cord will be smaller and will either run to your motherboard or Power supply(box in the back) the other(data) cable will run to your motherboard. make sure both ends of both cables are securly fastened to were they are going(if the PSU or motherboard side is unplugged consult a professional or your manual to find were it goes since its different on each computer). If all this checks out then i cant imagine what else could be the problem unless the dipswitches changed your CD player from slave to master(but that couldnt happen normally and if it did your floppy/HD/other CD or DVD drives wouldnt be working probably).
