Im on my parents computer upstairs. Its a dell dimension 8200. It was recently reset so that everything was whiped off. The windows and everything is back as well as most of the programs my dad works with alot. One problem is it has a dual drive with a cd drive and a dvd drive. when all was reset the dvd drive must have lost its drivers or something like that. I can't play dvds or use dvds on it. My dad feels that this is a problem so if anyone here is smart enough to point me in the direction I need to go that would be great. I tried dr divx thinking that would work but it didn't do the trick. Please don't reply unless you have a good idea on what to do. Guessing is cool but lets give those who are fairly sure on the trouble. Thanks guys.

What OS? if its XP home or pro it should have the drivers built in, and even so if its a decent drive it will have the drivers in ROM. Make sure the partition its assigned to is active (drive name ei:D, C, E whatever) make sure the switch on teh back of the drive is correctly assigned in CMOS with the master/slave settings. That right there is 99% of drive problems.

1.)Reinstall any drivers that came with the comp, like any CDs from Dell.

2.)If not, you may not have the newest DivX. Go to http://www.divx.com/divx/ and download the free DivX codec. I doubt this is the problem though.

It sounds like nothing internal was touched, so the jumper settings on the actual drive should be the same. It's gotta be that you didn't reinstall the software that came with the comp or something.

Turn it off, un plug it. Turn it on. Turn it off. Plug it in. Turn it on. If it go to add/remove hardware. It should search for plug and play devices. 99% it should log online to get a driver for it. It works for most plug and play devices but I'm not sure about dvd drivers. It didn't come with a disc for it? if so just reinstall it. If not, go to add/remove hardware.
