sup guys, so i was driving my truck around today (2000 S10, manual) and noticed that ive gone 104 miles on a little more than a quarter of a tank. what i was wondering is....with a stick shift, what is the best way to get better gas mileage? i.e. lower speed/higher gear?

and also....on average......how much does it usually cost to paint a vehilce the size of my S10. the body's real beaten up and if it dont cost much i may get it repainted..idk yet tho, just kinda thinkin about it.


aaaaaaaaaaand....have u ever heard of using dry ice to get dents out? my friend said if i get some and hold it on the dent (with gloves :looking ) it would pop out some of my dings. does it work? do i not touch the paint directly if i do do it? can it make my paint come off?

best way to get better gas mileage on a truck is to make sure tires are inflated good, no hard braking, easy accellerating, shifting at lower rpm's. run a bottle of injector cleaner and make sure them are clean, make sure your spark plugs are good.

i dont know what it would cost to get your truck painted, but i know it's not too cheap... and dont get maaco's cheap paint job.. it sucks... terribly [/experience]

i'm not sure on the dry ice thing..


EDIT: you're doing better than i am with my truck so dont complain.. i get about 250-280 miles on a 20 gallon tank...

keeping the revs way low should increase gas milage. Shifting early and going up an extra gear all help. but don't expect a lot of response if you engine isn't powerful.

You'll have to guestimate shifting early since it dosen't have a Tach. If it has a shift light, shift a little bit before you think that would come on.

But yeah just keep your rpms low. I was getting about 18 because I drove the **** out of my car when I first got my license. Now I drive it a lot easier and I top off about 24mpg. Average is 21 or 22. The way I see it, I shift at 2.5 or 3k rpms for every gear. Also here is how I look at shifting..

For every 10mph, go up a gear.

So..

1st - 10mph
2nd - 20mph
3rd - 25mph
4th - 30mph
5th - 40/45 mph

I'm going by speed limits. If I drive like that most the time, I'll get some pretty good gas mileage.

Also make sure your car has good plugs and wires. A tune up on an S10 shouldn't cost much at all. It was $100 to do it myself on my Prelude.. damn foreign cars. But yeah give it a tune up with plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor. You might actually just need to clean the dizzy cap, and be fine buying a new rotor.

Dry ice is supposed to work, I've heard about it too.
I haven't tried it yet though.

I guess the theory is that the cold will make the metal in the center of the dent contract and force it to pull itself straight. Anyway, wear gloves because it'll burn you.

I did use that 'ding-king' thing once. That worked alright for some small dents my friend wanted to get rid of before she sold her car. You glue it on with some hotglue and then use this clamp thing to pull the dent out. Worked pretty good actually.


Drive smoothly, check your tires, and keep your truck in good shape mechanically and with fresh filters and other throw away parts.

is it that much harder to spell out distributor? then you dont sound like a black lady.

basic tuneup, tire pressure, and just drive it easy

if you have the 2.2l its capable of getting 28mpg with a few mods like a new chip, intake, and exahust

a buddy of mine did this to his 2000 s10 so i know i saw it and if your interested i can get the list of stuff he used

Are you talking about those ebay chips? Those are bull****.. but I'm sure he could look on an S10 forum and find someone selling pre-tuned chips.

the best bang for buck way to get better gas millage outta anyvehical (minus general mantinece, no hard accelerating, etc.) is a computer reprogramer. Since u got a Chevy, it should be relatively easy to find a tuner..

my buddy has a 2004 Reg cab F150 4x4 w/ the 5.4 triton. got 15 before the power programer, and 20 after.

also try out hotter and colder spark plugs.
in my 4runner. i switched to the 4 head plugs instead of the 2 headed ones. and 1 step hotter and got about 1 mpg increase.

lol, come on guys...noone listens in auto class?
-dont have a gay exhaust, the stock exhaust is like it is for a reason
-evap canister (actually, more for emissions)
-O2 sensors
-obviously, treat the vehicle well, low rpm shifts, etc.
-spark plug gaps
-depending on the shape of it, new plug wires and/or distributor cap and rotor
-good, clean oil
- not too many miles on it, so a tune should not be necessary
-Mass airflow sensor
- clean air filter
-clean throttle body
-tire pressure.
-cant think of anything else...

Does it have the 4.3? if so, you arent going to get it that high. Youll see a slight improvement but not much.

accually ur wrong bro. MANY MANY tests hgave proven that taneuo covers reduce drag b/c the bed doesn't "fill" will non-moving air. your just making something up to sound smart. what happens is the air hits the tailgate and flys back into the air comming up over the truck. this is called drag. alot of ppl buy taoeno covers or just lower their tailgate or remove it and put a net in it's place.

the 4.3 will get about 17-19's tops.

and accually aftermarket exhausts have been proven to improve MPG b/c they allow the engine to breath better. Stock exhusts are very restictive for numerous reasons from emmissions to cost to manufacture.

throlle body spacers have also been proven to help emmisions. and on some vehicals... less restricitve air intakes help too. the reason is if the engine can produce more power, then u don't have to run the RPM's as high to accellerate or move the vehical the same speed, so u are going to use less gas in some cases... in others like super chargers, etc. it's not the same.

i never have seen that one. I've seen the one about the windows being down.

I've read numerous reports that report the same thing i have said. But then again. i could be wrong. it is the internet. i would like to see someone accually test it in a wind tunnle.
