Hello,

I could use some help in deciding on an aftermarket barrel for my Invert Mini. I only play speedball. At this point I am looking at the Deadly Wind CF Fibur 14", and the Dye Ultralight 14" 2 piece.

I have seen most of the reviews, and I know they are both well-liked by almost all the users. I have read that the Freak inserts may wobble a little on the DW. However, the Dye does not use inserts so matching can only be done by purchasing another back. If true, that could be a deal-breaker right there.

I am leaning towards the Deadly Wind barrel and trying to go with only two inserts for now, a .687 and a .689, rather than spend another $60 for the entire Freak kit. I know that the stock barrel on my Mini is .691. The place where I play sells mostly GI Sportz paintballs (and sometimes Empire). These brands bore out at about .687 (+/-) in warm weather. In any case, with the Mini's stock barrel these paintballs go right through with little or no resistance when inserted in the rear. I should also add that I am in Florida where the weather is warm most of the year and that went into determining the size of insert I think I should need since it is unlikely that the paintballs will get much larger because it doesn't get much hotter than Florida!

How does all this sound? Any advise from experienced players will be appreciated.

DW fibur without any hesitation. It's the best barrel system that I have ever used.

Also look into the Stela barrels that inception designs is making. That's VERY good quality. I would like to try them out.

DW, but buy the inserts used to avoid giving the gardners any more money, also, I would go with a 685 and 687 back rather than the 689, paint is getting small now a days. And dont get the 16" DW, they will not fit in the freak case

Thanks. I think I am down to the DW CF Fibur 12" with two Freak Inserts (.685 and .687). After reading the recent research on barrels, it seems that 12" one piece barrels and 14" two piece barrels are the best performers. I was looking at the Dye UL, but since it only comes in one bore size I would rather have the flexibility of switching out inserts whenever needed. Even though I don't think I will need more than the .685/.687 for now, you are right about paint getting smaller. I even read that some manufacturers are pushing for .50 to become the standard rather than .68. Anyway, whatever happens as long as they make the right inserts the DW should be right for me.

manufacturers were not pushing for .50 cal, one manufacturer was, that was GOG (gardner brothers) but basically the Europe launch crashed and burned hard which lead to them loosing smart parts in the first place. 50 will never catch on and is pretty much dead at this point anyway. I never thought I would need more than a few inserts but I have had mine for about 6 years now and have used every single insert at one point or another. Its up to you as to what you will need, its not a bad idea what you have there but it will end up costing you more in the long run if you end up getting the whole set

also, there are no performance differences between 12-16" barrels and one and two piece barrels do not make a difference either, dont let those things factor into your choice. there are some personal differences between them, like 12 inch barrels will be easier to move around and turn corners with but 16" barrels will be able to poke through bushes or push down bunkers a little better. I go 14 and go a little of both.

martix-if G brothers lost the patents how are they still selling the freak kits? I also found the superfreak kits on epires site, Im not sure whats going on

hmmmm, ya thats odd, you would think the price would go up if GOG has to buy the rights to it. the inserts still have the original labeling on them

I would not be surprised if one of the G brothers has their name on the patent as well, so while SP lost the patent, the G brothers did not so basically Kee gets to use it free of charge but the G brothers still do as well being one of the inventors and not selling their own rights to it much in the same way autococker was able to get around the e-marker patent

martix, what are these inception barrels? I have never heard of them

wait a minute, did kee buy the patents? or the intellectual property?

as far as i understood it, kee owns the intellectual property, which means they own the ideas, and are free to use them as they wish. but i'd assume under that same statement the gardners still hold their patents, which gives them access to the designs they used with those patents

Simon makes them. He was a lead designer for KEE. He designed the prophecy and the axe. About 2 years ago, he started his own business and has been creating incredible products.

like those rocking FLE axe bodies. even though i still don't like the axe, i like the inception bodies

i may be wrong on this but the way I thought it worked was there is the inventors and the owners of the patents, when SP went under the owners (SP) gave up the patent but since the G brothers did invent it, their name is still on the patent, while they can choose to sell it, if they do not, they are still able to use the patent free of charge. If thats true then they can still use it but can not collect on the ideas which would make sense

anyone know if kee has been collecting on the various patents they own now from SP, largely the E marker patent, im just curious
