Ok so I've decided to join the Army. I went down to MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) the other week and was disqualified at the end because I was 1% over my allotted body fat for my height. Here's the numbers.


I'm 5'10" and 230 LBS. Because I was this heavy they had to measure about my neck and stomach (they say they're measuring your waist but it's your mid stomach) to determine my % body fat. My only problem was that my stomach was like 2 inches to big :(

So I go back in a month to measure again, and I need to get my stomach down as much as possible.

How can I do this? Just a lot of sit ups? Any other ideas?

Civil Affairs Specialist. I'm basically a negotiator to the people of whatever country I'm in. That's tentative though.


To all the responses above, I haven't eaten fast food or drank ANY pop in the past four months. I eat clean and healthy and also exercise every day. That includes 1-2 mile run, sit ups, push ups, weights and so on. Here's my concern though; I know I can lose the weight no problem. In the last 3 months I've lost 40 lbs. My concern is that I will lose a lot of weight, but not a lot of it will be off my stomach so I'll fail again since my stomach won't go down as much, regardless of still losing like ~10 lbs.

In response as to why I wanted to join:

This is something I've always wanted to do, but I've never had the balls to actually follow through with it. However 3 of my friends just joined and I wasn't planning on doing it until I went to see their graduation from Basic Training. The whole ceremony was very powerful, and getting to be on the base seeing it all first hand, and hearing them talk about how much they loved it made me decide to actually go through with it this time.

It wasn't overnight though. I spent at least 3 solid days thinking about nothing but this. I went back and forth over and over but finally realized that I'm tired and bored of my life right now, and I'd be pissed if I kept living this life and didn't sign up finally.

So I guess my question was that will doing a lot of sit ups flatten my stomach a decent amount? Or is there something else I can do. I plan on losing weight until then, but I want a lot of it to be off my stomach since that's the only thing that is keeping my out right now.

Honestly, i would use this as a chance to get fully in shape. PTs are going to kick your ass, and you will get recycled if you don't pass *you will have to start basic all over again with the next group*

the muscle will push out your stomach if anything. run/bike/box/jog/whatever will burn fat. not situps.
That's what I was afraid of. I'll just keep focusing on cardio since that seems to be the fastest way to burn fat off. And I know I'll be able to pass PT tests. I have ~1.5 months until I go and I'm in decent shape now. I'll be training every day until I ship.

You're running 1-2 miles which really isn't **** (no offense to be honest) You need to be running upwards of 3-5 miles on a consistent basis to really see any good calerie burn.

If I may offer some unsolicited advice, my cousin was always thinking about the military as a career, and spoke like it was the greatest thing after basic, but now, a year later, he's ready to get out ASAP. Maybe talk to someone who's been in the military for more than 8 weeks?

YEah, they do 10-15 km marches in FULL GEAR, uphills and ****, it's brutal.

If I may offer some unsolicited advice, my cousin was always thinking about the military as a career, and spoke like it was the greatest thing after basic, but now, a year later, he's ready to get out ASAP. Maybe talk to someone who's been in the military for more than 8 weeks?

I have another friend whose been in 4 years and my Uncle has made a career out of it and both still love it. I know what I'm doing, I wouldn't make a decision like this based off of one or two opinions.

Sorry but that is terrible advice. If he doesn't run frequently, especially longer distances, randomly increasing the work load and weekly mileage is going to stress his joints and tendons too much, especially since he is overweight.

It's about heart rate and duration, rather than distance. The miles you log are just for gloating purposes. Any real runner knows that. :cool:

You'd probably be better off mixing your workouts up by utilizing a bike several times a week, as it will be less demanding on your bodies fragile mechanics while still providing sufficient exercise.

I think you have heard a great deal of advise that is worth taking..

My contribution:

Get ready for daily PT. Get up to running 5 miles at a crack cause that is the shortest distance you will ever run while in Basic. You will do this every day.

Get good at pushups, like 50+ at a crack. You will be doing tons of pushups.

Do leg lifts -- when you lay flat on your back and raise your legs 3" off the ground and hold it. DI's love that one. Make it more fun by doing a body v and lift your shoulders off the ground too.

Basic is a pain, but a manageable one. However if you are a soft body when you go in it will be hell. You get no sympathy from your squad or the DI's.

lastly, we are in wartime. If you don't think that you won't end up over here with a rifle becase of your MOS, or recruiter's promises, you are sadly mistaken. EVERYONE is an 11b Basic Infantryman before they do anything, and it is your first and foremost job with the Army.

So take the time to get in good shape. Take basic seriously, but don't let it get you down. Keep your eyes and ears open, keep your mouth shut, and look for every opportunity to lead.
