I have seen pbreview.com review of titanium rear bolt for Tippmann 98 Custom. They claim that hammer having 60 % of original mass still works, and gives far less recoil that original part. I am not happy to spend 60$ for such single part, so I am considering to buy cheap steel rear bolt and ligten it drilling some holes to reduce mass. What do you think about such mod ? Has anybody tested such approach before ?

People lighten Spyder hammers this way all the time. I've done it by drilling a bunch of holes, always thought of trying it on a 98 as well as a Spyder, but never got around to it.

You can drill it, or you can grind on it. The only thing to watch is that it still has to seal against the inside of the powertube, or the gun will probably have recocking problems.

Either way you'll need some pretty tough bits to bite into the hardened steel. Sounds like you have that under control though.
