aright I need help making an electric go kart. I don't know how to use a welding torch but I can probably get a hold of one and a mask. I'm gonna get this motor and I have a complete bike with 14 speeds, I was wondering if I could use that for the chain and such, I'm also gonna use the brakes for brakes on my go kart. Then I also have an old tricycle and a wagon. What I need are wheels, either tricycle wheels or the ones on the wagon, and help on how to do the steering, and mounting the motor. I've never done this before but I've had the idea for a long time.

Any help is really appreciated.

Get a 5HP Briggs & Stratton engine. That thing will def not work. You are going to need a bigger chain than a bike chain...Haha. Bike chain. http://www.creativekarting.com/Products/Chain/chain.htm Something from there will work. You're going to need a strong axel, I hope you have one. It's also going to need a hub to put gears on (only one for this purpose probably). You'll also need brake callipers, which will be on the back axel as well. Tires will need hubs to attatch to the back axel, as well as the front.

Umm, you do know that so far what you have for building something like this will probably not get you very far at all, right? Are you looking for something from the Little Rascals, or something that will actually work and take a beating out in a field?

ok, so how long of a cord are you going to be running to that motor?
hah i'll probably use some of my rechargeable batteries, from my old power wheels thing. There are two of them and they seem like they'll work.

lol something that'll be good for running around in my backyard, and just having fun. I posted the wrong link. but im definitely reconsidering the electric motor after what I've heard. This thing is not gonna be at a track of anything, I just want it to go. Its nothing serious just something for me and my friends to drive around in.

I need it cheap I'll work as much as I have to to make it but I really don't have much money for the engine. Figure like 100 most. It needs to stop and go basically.

EDIT- whats the diff between gas and electric? there are tons of horizontal gas engines out there and I was looking and the electric one I'm looking at has 5 hp and spins at 3450 RPM when gas motors that have that much hp and like 3600rpm cost like twice as much.

you will never be able to run a 5 horse electric motor like that with rechargeable power-wheel batteries. You may be able to find a cheap, used gas engine at your lawnmower dealer, or lumberyard or something.

Uhm, an electric motor will NOT work...

Go look at garage sales. My friends bought 6 go karts for 200 bucks, fixed them all, and he race around in his 1 acre backyard! Its sooo frickin fun!

Gonna make one mean tricycle eh?
There's an idea. Actually, custom frame, and a snowmobile or motorcycle engine in er....someday. It will seriously be the fastest thing I'll ever drive if I put it together right. Snowmobiles can do 110 plus on the snow weighing around 500 pounds. A go cart built for street or dirt that weighs in the ball park of 200 has the potential to go at least 2 times faster. Power:weight ratios AND different surfaces, and different designs = mega death trap :D.

Well if I can get batteries that will work then it'll be the same as a gas motor. Besides, my friend has a ranch where I'll probably use this and its like an hour to the nearest town from there, and I'll probably use it there too. But his ranch has tons of electricity, so it'll be easier.

I live in a pretty populated area, not in an area where you would find many hicks selling go karts.

I honestly dont htink the electric motor will work. Just find a cheap gas one. Like someone said, look at garage sales and stuff. People are trying to get rid of that kinda stuff and will noramlly give it to you cheap.

Just on a side note, my friend and I are making a go kart out of an old golf cart and a motorcycle engine from a 1979 kawasaki kx250. This thing is gonna haul when it is idone, and it will look a little bit like an f1 car. Best part is, we got the motorcycle for free cuz the person said it didnt work, spent 2 dollars on parts and broke the clutch loose and now we can race across the parking lot with it.

If you want to use a fast electric motor, try using an old starter motor or something. The problem is with any electric motor, you're batteries need recharging. If you don't have a recharging source, then expect about 5 minutes of riding, and then a half hour or probably more of recharging.

If you really want this to work, use a gas engine.

I just got done, building my own three wheel chopper. I took an old Briggs & Stratton bottom drive engine, and cannibalized a rear axle assembly off of an old riding lawnmower. I then built my own frame, and forks, and everything else. It's pretty sweet. I built the forks a little too weak, so I'm going to rebuild those hopefully this weekend. I'll put up pics when I can.
