okay... horror was used for dramatics.. not really horror stories, but post up some stories you got of any asshole mechanics or guys that tried to rip you off bad....


i have a couple.. both beyond my control (couldnt get it to my garage to work on it myself)

one, was when my car would just randomly die on left turns... it would jump and sputter, then just choke... well i got stranded outside of my school and it wouldnt start at all... so i got it towed to a place called krause auto service (a pretty well known place in town).. they have it for about a day and a half and call me to tell me my car is done... they replaced the distributor, cap, and rotor for a grand total of 300$ with labor, and so i get in, start it up, everything seems fine... well i'm driving home and my car dies about a block away from home... are you kidding me..

so i call them back up, get it towed back to get them to fix the problem that they said they fixed but didnt.. i get a call back saying my car was done and the best part is the guy said "well we should have charged you for towing and working on it, but we'll waive the fees and hope you'll do business with us again".... i'm like wow.. never coming there again... ever...


the second one, i went to the emissions test station here, and everything was all fine and peachy.. well after i get tested and everything comes out perfect, i notice my brake light was on.. i just figured whatever, i thought it was my ebrake sticking again... well i pulled forward a little bit, hit the brake pedal and there was no resistance... i was like "son of a *****" i knew it was a busted line.. so i pull around the building, park it, and sure enough, my res is empty, and there's fluid all over my tire... i called my parents, eventually got it towed to west bend tire, expecting it to be a cheap soft line fix... the call me back after about 2 days and quoted me almost $1000 just for rear brake work saying i needed to replace pretty much almost everything... i was furious and was like no way in hell, and my dad insisted that because he has been going there for so many years and blah blah blah that they wouldnt rip me off... but to this day i still think that was b/s.. (btw i didnt get the full amount of work done.. and i actually refused to pay that much and wanted it towed home.. my parents got mad at me and told them to fix it anyways and they paid the 600$ bill)

also, another thing i noticed on the bill that i know for a fact they didnt mention anything or ask me if i wanted to do it was replace a broken wheel stud and put a new lug on there... now i know i know, it's a safety thing, but still.. to do it, not tell me about it, and charge me for it? isnt that illegal?

I don't really have any, since I do everything myself with my dad's help a lot of the times.

I went to a muffler shop though and asked how much for them to cut my old downpipe off, install the new one and weld it to the flexpipe. They tried to tell me that the header I put on my car won't work. No it wont, thats why I got a new downpipe you dumbasses. After I conviced them they started making comments about the 02 sensor. I told them I would re-wire it myself but they insisted on ordering a new one.

Finally I got them to give me a quote just to install the pipe, weld it, and put a gasket inbetween the pipe and header.. $179 plus they'd have my car for 2 days.

I went to MIDAS.. they did it while I was in school and I came to pick it up after school. $62 bucks.

The other place wasn't a franchise, just some ****ty local joint called Bill's Muffler Shop.

yeah.. midas was pretty cool to me when i got my exhaust done...

and the only reason i really have them stories (i work on my car 100% of the other times) is because i was in a situation where i didnt really have a choice, or the tools to do the work..

Yeah I replaced the dizzy in my old Jeep.. along with cap, rotor, wires, plugs..

Used dizzy, everything else was new it only cost me like 100 bucks total.

Cost me 100 for plugs, wires and rotor on my Prelude.. :dodgy:

omg.. is it like the dreaded death wobble?!?! i hate that.. seriously you're just like waiting for a wheel to pop off... the front ends ont hem things are so finnicky... lol once everythings good tho you dont have too much of a problem with it..

Right now, the shop my dad currently offers his patronage wants to charge him $1100 to replace a skid plate on his Jetta..

As if paying to replace a ****ing skid plate isn't bad enough, get this: It's made of plastic.

I nearly puked in my soup when I heard this.

Aslo, this Jetta was built by the factory out of alignment, thus it chews one tire constantly.
Also, the headlights and tail lights go out CONSTANTLY and have to be replaced.
That's what you get when you drive an 02 400,000 KM :shrug:
****in TDI's are little Tanks, I swear.

It's absolutely rediculous...
Fun car to drive, though when it's manual. I love slappin her in gear and lettin the turbo Screeeeeaam :)

Its not the death wobble from the DS, but its about as bad. ****in pisses me right off.

You ever go mudding then drive away without cleaning out the wheel wells? I went a few weeks ago, then pulled out. I get to about 45 and it feels like the whole dam thing i just going to fall apart. So I pull over and scrape about 3 #'s of mud off the inside of each rim. Burn the **** out of my hand on the brake rotor, then continue. Good as new. The thing beats drives me nuts sometimes.

yeah... in that one thread where i posted muddy pics of it my wheels were dug in 3/4 of the way, and my body was pretty much almost laying on the mud... i got out and didnt clean the wheels off and thought i lost my weights.. lol but holy crap.. xj's can do so much stock it's unbelievable..

yeah.. the 2.5l is my biggest setback... some recovery gear and disco's are all i really wanna get into.. MAYBE a small lift, but with college and all coming up (applying for spring semester) i highly doubt i'll have that kind of money to throw around... i'd suggest disco's for you too.. it'll give your axles more moving ability and they wont move the entire body around with them like they would if the swaybar was connected.

ok first off DO NOT EVER BRING YOUR CAR TO THE GOD DAMN DEALERSHIP!

ok, now i dont have any stories about my own personal car, but at the garage i work at, we arent always the first mechanics to see a car and give a estimate and stuff, so we hear the customers horror stories

horror story 1 kia dealership

a woman brought her BRAND NEW kia into the the dealership because her brakes we're making noise, they couldnt find anything wrong, but she got her car back and the AC wouldnt work. wtf? well she brought it back to the kia dealer, and they said the AC system has gotten contaminated and needs to be replaced, around 900$.
she of course thinks this is alittle to odd. So she brings it to us at our garage. well, in about 10 seconds, we find the problem, somebody unplugged the AC switch thats located under the hood (low pressure switch) and somebody took out the AC fuse................ and we fixed it in 2 minutes abd charged her 4$ for installing a fuse. worked great.

horror story #2: just go walk into a GM dealership, and look at the job prices posted, and make sure you dont fall on the ground from rofling.

heres why, for intance, a serpentine belt costs about 20$, and takes about 1 hour to install, so my garage charges 68$ to install a belt (48$ an hour). The buick dealership near me charges a fixed rate of $175 to change a belt. WTF!?




doomsday was right, the better/more honest shops are the small indepedent garages. Typically the guys at cottman and midas and stuff arent the best mechanics.

yes, it is. if you did not sign for it, they are not allowed to do the work and charge you for it. what you should do is say "I did not allow you to do the work, I did not ask you to do the work, I am NOT paying you to do the work. So you either take my car back, put the old parts back on free of charge, or you keep the new parts on there free of charge."

This is why you read the invoice you sign BEFORE they start working on your car, and keep your copy. Any and all work they want to do after you sign that paper, they have to have your explicit consent.

hunts, At our my garage, we get stuff like that all the time (finding something else wrong with the car while working on it) . and its either one of 2 cases.

1. The customer told us to fix anything thats wrong (alot of our customers do that cause we are a good honest shop and they trust us) so the 25$ it costs to put a wheel stud in, its no problem

2. We have every customers phone number, usually their home phone and cell, its not too hard for us to just call them and ask

yeah they called me and told me a bunch of crap wrong with it, and i told them to only fix what is ABSOLUTELY necessary... and they actually went through all the things that they thought SHOULD be done to it and i said yes or no... not once was a wheel stud mentioned... not that i really care.. i was just like hey... isnt that illegal or something?.. lol

Its not really a skid plate, its to keep water and stuff out of there, also it keeps the air flowing were its supposed to for engine cooling.
