Phantom's are one of the better pumps made. If you want to spend the money go for it. Maybe you can get a deal on a slightly used one.

If you're looking for around $100 or less I'd say look for an SL-68 II on ebay or elsewhere. They pop up on ebay all the time. I bid on a bunch of them and lost before I found Alpha's on this forum.

The ACI Maverick is supposed to be a nice little pump as well. Don't forget about the PGP too.

Yeah, that's Ghetto...

But what can you say about Brass Eagle, right? My first self-pump-mod involved taking apart a BE Talon and replacing the mainspring with a garage door latch spring cut to fit in the hopes of increacing the velocity to something usable. Sucker belted out about 330fps. It got, oh... 10 shots to the 12-gram. I never played with it (hot markers are just wrong) with the killer spring in it, but it was an interesting marker, to say the least. It would splinter wood chips off plywood bunkers...

For other pumps, look at the tracer/maverick if you're looking to buy new. Check out the sheridans (P-68, PGP, K-series, etc.) if you're looking for old-school quality. Heh... if you can get your hands on a K-2, you're just the man. You can get a decent P-series on eBay for maybe $100 if you're lucky. Send it to a custom shop like Palmer's to get a spring/seal job done so the velocity will go where you want it. That'll cost you maybe $40 plus shipping, but it'll shoot great forever.

As far as 'Phantom quality but not a Phantom' goes, there's not much that exists. Sure there's better custom markers, but price and availability become your enemies. Besides, you can get a REALLY nice custom Phantom in the sub-$500 category.

My phantom has an upgraded bored, fluted 16" barrel with a muzzle break, T-stock, VSC and hopper right mainbodies, some tweaking of the internals and .45 grip. All parts are gold/black acid washed aluminum (picture on left). It ran about $470, all told. Expensive? It's a little pricey, sure. But you can *moderately* justify the cost because you'll never shoot very much paint ever again. My days of 500-round games are long gone and I'll only shoot 500 rounds if I'm playing all day in a scenario or something like that. Maybe it only saves you $20 every time you play, but that really adds up. You could easily say that playing pump for a year offsets the cost of the marker handily. Good luck and welcome to the enlightened side. ;)
