I'm thinking about selling my car and getting a different one. I'll only have about $9,000 to spend on it. I'm fairly open to your suggestions, but I want it to be pretty quick.

I was looking at older Vettes like late '70s..do they usually have expensive problems, etc?

Older vettes have some reliability issues as well.

I'd stick to something semi-recent if you don't want to deal with repairs too much(atleast 95+)

If you find a good one then it should be ok, but they are few and far between. Plus the vettes your looking at arn't that fast. They only make around 200hp in stock form. In fact the average post-y2k Honda Civic is faster. The 1976 vette runs a 16.5 quarter and my Mazda Tribute Suv runs a 16.7 or so.

Well, in the years of the C3 up to 1974, you could get better engine options. These numbers represent gross hp, which is basically horsepower ratings w/o all accessories, as opposed to current net hp which is horsepower with all accerssories attached (drivetrain, beltdriven accessories)

In 1968 and 1969, you could get a 427 with 430bhp which did mid 13's in the quarter mile.

In 1970, you could get a 350 rated at 300bhp. The LT1 350 made it's debut that year and was rated at 370bhp, and the LS5 454 was also an option rated at 390bhp

Same goes for 1971, but the LS6 454 at 425hp was also an option

But yeah, after that, they made GM reveal the net hp numbers which were around what Dooms said before (low 200's). The 454 was still in production untill 1974 which made 270hp (net). Some of the mid 70's vettes had to comply with emissions regulation and were weakened up quite a bit thanks to peanut cams and emissions equiptment and things of that nature.

So, if you can get your hands on one with a 427 or a 454, you are in good shape. Not likely with the budget you have now though. But dooms, about the 2000+ Honda Civics being faster...na. Even the stock vettes with the 350's ran mid-low 14's. Civics run 16's factory.

What you CAN do, is find a C3 that needs a bit of work for around $3,000-$5,000 and either drop in a new 350ci crate engine that'll make you around 250-300hp, or work with the one you have.

If he is looking to spend $9,000 the best thing he is getting from the 70's is a post emmissions vette ('73-79) with the 350, which are the years that made the least hp and ran mid 16's on average. As soon as you go pre-emmissions you're looking at like $15,000 in the low range. The good thing though is 350 parts are plentiful and everyone knows how to work on them. You could build it up or just go buy a crate engine.

So basically rule those out.
