when your towing you want to have a lower gear to keep the rpms up so you can pull more. With the overdrive on, your axel ration rises making it harder to accelerate and maintain speed.

well what overdrive is techinnically is a metal rod that connects the tranny and teh engine directly, this way having a direct connection more power is transfered.

over drive will automatically engage when you are a steady speed and rpm. and disengange when you are accelerating.

not true. overdrive means the transmission input shaft turns slower than the output shaft. for example, my trans (AOD) has a 2/3:1 (.67:1) od ratio, which means the engine is turning 2/3 the speed of transmission output shaft, which helps fuel economy. my 3rd gear is the 1:1 (direct drive)
