A new Medic... woah

I just got a job at a pet store. Was gonna apply to be a ref but then realized how HOT it was at the outdoor AND indoor fields near me.

Honestly though, reasons I didn't apply there were because it's 30 minutes away(the pet store turns out to be 25 minutes-sadface-) and I was told I would make basically less than minimum wage(the pet store is minimum wage).

Stupid pet store... doesn't even sell pets... what kind of pet store doesn't sell pets?

Met a hot co-worker doh.

What is your budget? Do you need a tank and hopper with that as well or just a marker?

Ok - my thoughts.

If you're bent on getting a setup - you can probably find something that runs on CO2 - in a STBB configuration, and a thermal and workable mask... You're probably looking at spending about $150ish... part used, part new.

The first thing you need to pick up, especially as a Ref...is a NICE mask. You're going to be stuck in that thing for quite some time - so get somethign that fits you well, is comfortable, and you can comfortably maintenance. A lot of us here like the EFLEX... but a ProFlex can be had for about 2/3 the price. EVENTS are nice as well. The i4 is probably a little small to Ref in, as coverage isn't its strong point... and there are some other Empire/Invert and Proto suggestions. See Trbo's noob guide for suggestions. Just be sure to try them on first.

Until then - I'd honestly say for you to play with a rental or someone else who works there's marker... and just enjoy it for now. Most of us have learned the hard way that you can't short-cut your way into paintball. The investment isn't a small one. If you take shortcuts or try to go in inexpensively - you just have another $30 crappy barrel/drop/mask sitting in the bottom of your gear bag...

Ok thanks, ill get a mask
I don't mean to come across as being a domineering asshat - I have reffed before, and I know what its like to be stuck in a mask for 20min->1hr at a time. If it fogs, you're still responsible for the safety of those you're watching over...so it can't fog. You'll be wearing it for at least 1/3 of your day on the field - even in airball. Its also the only protection your eyes will have....and your eyes are the only thing you really can't buy a 2nd of if it breaks.

The nice mask will run you between ~50/65ish and $120. If you intend to continue reffing...this will be a worthwhile investment and will keep you comfortable, and on the field longer. It also will be usable for when you go out and play.

A marker from a coworker or a buddy will be an easy thing to borrow once people get to know who you are. Don't rush the decision. Also - with this year already being half over - you have a slew of new markers coming out in the 4th quarter and first quarter - a holiday ahead of you, and a bunch of people who may be looking to unload last year's product at a more reasonable price due to market saturation. Buy a mask, spend on paint, stockpile some money, and see what tickles you. Worst thing you can do is buy something you don't want...because...odds are, everyone else already knows its not something to buy - and now you're stuck with it.
