Release date is sometime late 2006 at the earliest.

How much will it cost?
Typically the last two generations of the PlayStation have been priced at around $300 at launch. Both have continuously decreased in price year on year into their life, its quite likely PS3 will do the same. It's not known how much it will cost but around $300 is probably a fair guess, as this is the maximum price most gamers would be willing to way.

"The report suggests that by late 2006 - generally considered to be the earliest possible launch window for the PS3 - these features will cost roughly $250 to include in a system, leading to a $500 price tag for the next generation console

At this level, we believe that many consumers will be alienated," the report warns; and indeed, such a high price tag would definitely place Sony in a difficult position, especially as not all consumers will want the extra PSX-style functions.

However, it should be noted that Sony has made a number of comments, both on and off the record, in recent months which suggest that it could be planning a multi-tiered approach to the PS3 - with different versions of the hardware being launched to fulfil specific market needs.

It seems likely that the company will launch a "bare bones" PS3 which is designed as a games console with minimal media playback and network access features, with a more complex PSX style device incorporating media server functions, mass-storage and DVD or Blu-Ray disc burning capabilities being launched at a higher price point."

* It will support Blu-ray (obviously), DVD±R/W, CD-R/RW
* Backwards compatible with the PlayStation 2 and original Playstation
* One 3.2GHz Cell processor—total system performance rated at 2.18 teraflops (uh, that’s actually about twice what Microsoft is claiming the Xbox 360 will do); it will have 256MB system RAM 3.2GHz, and 256MB GDDR VRAM at 700MHz
* The nVidia graphics will be called the RSX (”Reality Synthesizer”), and will trump the Xbox 360 with 1080p (yes, that’s a p) graphics support.
* There will be a 2.5-inch hard drive (i.e. laptop hard drive) attachment—a first for a Sony launch (no, we don’t count the PSX and/or the FF add-on)
* Memory Stick Duo slot, and very surprisingly, an SD and CF slots
* Bluetooth support with up to seven wireless controllers
* Six USB system ports
Just A condesed version of what was said earlier.,and a little bit more in lamens(sp) terms.

naw bro, they're kind of like xbox controllers, and I don't have a problem. Hell, I prefer the big controller over a little one, I feel like I'ma break the little one.

the controller is ugly, handles way to long. Looks good from what i see. Hope it is better in the graphics department, b/c i'm tired of that being why the xbox is better right now, no ****, it came out latter w/ better tech, it had better be. Processor set architechture sounds awesome.

i'm going to wait till i got to college next year to buy a console. I figure i can find which one my roomie has, and see what games are out (though i've always love sonys lineup) and the price may be below $200 by then.

Read up on the cell processors that sony is using, very interesting. 9 mictroproccesors!!!!

i watched a video of some games coming out. they had devil may cry 4, gran turismo 5, tekken, and killzone. the video for killzone looks ABSOLUTELY PHENOMINAL. they had a gameplay movie as oppose tot he others that were just renders. the graphics are insane, and the first opening scene of killzone just looks ridiculously incredibly. it honestly looks like playstation's halo. i can see the price of ps3 being at around 350-400. i also read somewhere that the games might start off at 60-70$ but will fall really quickly back down to 50$ hopefully this can be a holiday gift, or since its coming out in 06, a b-day gift. or mabye ill have to pay for it :(.

It should be a good system, but I will probably go with the xbox 360. I love xbox live, and the xbox seems to have better games. The ps3 might be a little better in performance, but what good will that be without good games.
