Well there is this thing for eighth graders called "The Patriots Pen" Anyway you have to write this essay about "what service to this country means to you." If you win first place you get 200$,second is 100$ and 3rd is 50$. If you win you go to regionals then state. I'm hoping i win of course, and there's only like 10 oter people in it. Anyway here it is, i'll get back to you guys to let you know if i won.

There are some things in life that deserve respect. United States soldiers for one, earn my full respect. Why? Because almost every day, a soldier proudly approaches a battlefield, realizing the fact that he may not come back out alive. Yet- he still proceeds. Once again, you ask yourself why. Why would a person so courageously walk on to an onslaught where he may very easily lose his life? For adventure? For thrills? No, it is simply fighting for something you love. Protecting something you love. Something you want your loved ones and friends to have for years to come. Something that no amount of money, or property, or power could ever amount to. Freedom. Yes, soldiers lose their lives everyday to keep America a free country.

So, in order to serve your country and prove that you love it, you must register for the Army, go through many months of training, and then when a war is declared, go and fight? No. There are many other ways to serve your country. Take teaching, for instance. If you are a teacher, you are educating the whole next generation, which is the future of the country. Joining a small group that cleans up a city park every weekend, would be serving your country. Becoming a nurse, in order to care for sick children, would be a way to serve your country. Even the smallest things, like not littering, or recycling, and even voting on something you think should happen, or voting against something you don't want to happen, would be ways to serve your country and show your respect for it.

Service to this country can mean one thing for one person, and a different thing for another person. But to me, service to this country means picking up that piece of trash, or throwing the can away into a "recycling" bin and not the "trash" bin. Taking that precious time out of your weekend, going to the booth, and voting for a representative you think would represent your believes better than the current one. Our ancestors made America a great country, so let's keep it that way.
