how did you break your arm. i broke mine while snowboarding, it was up high by my shoulder. when it healed it was slighly crooked, and still is. like i can feel where it was, and you can see it on the xrays. the doctror was thinking of having me have surgery but decided not to. supposedly by th tim im 18 it should be back to normal. i highly doubt that. but it has definately got better, before i couldnt raise my hand all the way up but now i can.

broke my wrist is 3 spots went into got two pins put in 2 months they were taken out. i think your going in for outpatient surgery, which means they:
a. knock you out
b. cut you up
c. wake you up
d. you leave

if that is the case yes you will be out they'll treat you just like a surgery patient (for the most part) but you can leave when the painkillers wear off.

My son just had this same surgury done and actually with the plates, he didn't need a cast and he recovered fairly quickly... He got some good pain meds, but we were able to handle most of the pain with tylenol.

Good luck... get yourself a stress ball to squeeze and that will help you keep the strength in your forearm...

They usually do put you under for invasive surgery such as putting a plate in your arm, but the IV isn't usually used to put you to sleep. They usually use an inhalant because it acts faster. The IV is usually for painkillers, blood infusions and saline solution.

Last time I broke a bone it went like this: Travelling down a hill at 70 kmph (45-50 mph), car cut me off, slammed on the brakes, supermanned over the handlesbars, flew through the air, broke the fall with my hands, broke my wrist and collarbone on impact, skidded 15-20 yards on the ground.

Went to the hospital, got the wrist splinted, got lots of drugs for the pain, got my cuts tended to, went to sleep. Woke up, went to surgery, got put to sleep.

Woke up, puked, (very common as a result of the drug used to put you under), noticed they had taken the liberty to put a catheter in without clearing it with me, if you don't know what a catheter is, trust me, you don't want one. I had to stay in hospital for 4 days to recover enough to go home, but I live in Canada, so it was all free, dunno how things work for you guys, maybe it will be a one day thing.

The pain shouldn't be too bad really. I was supposed to get a plate in mine too, but once they got in there they found they didn't need to put one in. It hurt a lot the day after the surgery, because my wrist swelled up a lot so it was being squeezed by the cast, but then they split the cast to relieve the pressure and put some fiberglass on over the original cast after the swelling went down to reinforce it. It sucked for me because I sprained the wrist I didn't break so I really couldn't do anything with either hand and my broken collarbone made even sitting upright kind of tough.

I know what its like typing with one hand, I broke my wrist the first weekend of eleventh grade and I had typing class that semester, I got up to 36 wpm with my left index finger. Didn't take me long to catch up after I was healed up.

Feel free to throw any more questions my way, if there's one thing I know about, its fractures, I've had more than my share.

thanks for helping guys. your helping a lot. as for the pain, im not to worrried about, i have arealy high tolerance for pain, cuz when i broke my arm, it didnt really hurt, i thought it was just a pulled muscle and i kept playin. I told my dad i would sleep it off and if he hadnt convinced me to got to the immediate care center i would stiil be walkin aroung with a broken arm, so im hoping this surgery will be in and out, no prob, cuz i have to get back to school for midterms friday

i had foot surgery for a bone spur, and it was freakin awesome. they gave me tons of percuset (sp?) in the IV and then they gassed me. when i woke up they carted me around in a wheelchair for a bit and i felt like i was flying the whole way.

of course there was some foot pain for like a month or two after that, but im good as new now

Just dont dwell on it too much. Youll probably go under, and youll get lots of good-feeling pain meds. If you think about the surgery too much you will worry needlessly, take it from someone who has gone into 3 surgeries willingly(car accident followup) and 1 unwillingly(car accident).

If you are spending the night at the hospital, bring some gameboy, magazines, etcetera to keep ya occupied. I spent 4 days at the hospital and it wasnt til like the 3rd day that i got some entertainment.

Good luck and try not to worry about it. I know its hard not to but really it wont be too bad.

And take Medic's advice. You dont want your forearm to atrophy(sp) more than possible. Rehab on your muscles is a *****.

well, i got back 4 hours ago anf fell asleep right away. its funny because they put me 2 sleep through an IV, and i was hoping for the gas, but didnt get it. then they tried to wake me up, but i was in 2 deep in a sleep and i guess the nurse started to get pissed.

Then i startyed tossing and turing and my iv fell out, and they had to re-do it in my arm, insted of my hand, well yea...thats my story
