Barrel choice: Apex or J&J kit

OK, I am new to the sport and am loving it. I got a 98C on ebay that came with 5 barrels, elec hopper, folding stock, drop forward and HPA tank. I have since removed the stock and have been trying the different barrels. Out of the 5, 2 of them were stock, 1 ia a 21" sniper (CMI, I think), 1 is a Smart Parts progressive and the last one is a no-name.

I have been using the progressive as it seems to be just as accurate as the CMI without the unweildy length or the chrome. While the SP barrel seems to work good, I was really considering getting a newer barrel along with some other upgrades/parts.

The big issue is I am torn between the Apex or a J&J Edge Starter kit. I have never used an Apex or Flatline, so that would be new. At the same time, my gut tells me that I would be much better off with a kit as I would them have more options when using different paint.

I play woods mostly, so the distance is somewhat negligable. I would much prefer accuracy, but if I can get both with the apex, well....

What would you get?

apex, like the flatline does not give you any additional usable range, it does have the ability to curve paint around but im not going to go into why that is useless (its 9am and im not up for all the typing) J&J edge is a good kit. if you want to dump the money sure, but the biggest and i mean biggest piece of advise i can give you is to NOT buy any other upgrades for it. the 98 is a blowback marker and that means its pretty limited just by its disign, aftermarket parts do little if anything and are gennerally not woth the money you have to spend to get them. upgrading tippmanns is like trying to get a honda civic to run with top fuel drag cars, sure you can dump lots of money into it but at the end of the day your still very VERY far away from actually being able to do it and you have drained your bank account when, if you would have sold the civic and gotten a much better car to start with you could have saved money and gotten more. what im saying is, drive the civic as long as your happy with it, once you want more speed sell it and get something else

the two best things you can get (after a good mask, if you dont have a thermal lense mask already go dump good money on one) is a HPA tank (it will help with consistancy, cold weather games, high rates of fire and arguably accuracy) and a good hopper, it will make sure there is always a paintball in the breach ready to fire (a good one will result in VERY few chops/breaks)

Thanks for the reply. I understand the logic and do not plan on dumping a ton of money into this. I am a recreational player (play once a month or so) and plan on keeping this gun for a long time. One of the reasons I chose it was that it was cheap and they have a reputation of being bullet proof. I already have a decent mask, hopper and HPA tank along with a drop forward. (all but the mask came with the gun when I bought it used) The only other additions I was going to add were a rocket cock and barrel kit. I was only really interested in the Apex kit for the range and accuracy (accuracy moreso) and not the curving. Also, I am not looking for more speed from the gun. I waste too many shots as it is.

Since everywhere I look, the barrel is the most important upgrade to any gun and the fact that I will be keeping this set-up for a while, I was really leaning towards the JJ kit. I doubt I will ever want anything more that that as I enjoy it as it is and I already have too many money sucking hobbies, so I decided to settle on this.

personally i wouldnt bother with the rocket cock, if you take care of the marker how offten are you going to need to cock it anyway? and of that handfull of times in the day whats the difference between grabbing a cocking rod on the side and a cocking ring on the back?

do what you want though, its your money afterall, if you see more of an advantage to it then sure, but just dont make the mistake of dumping too much money into a tippmann

its not going to make it quieter, the sound comes from the barrel, i can see it helping to keep dirt out but you can pretty much run a 98 with mud around it and just a tip from someone who has been around, if you have your marker in the dirt all the time, your not taking very good care of it, ill have to ask my mirine buddy to be sure but i dont think they even do that with m-16s and they were designed to be in the worst of conditions.
