it's a bit late to be asking that, now that you paid for it.

It's nothing amazing, but it'll be good to start with now that you own it.

he said that he is getting one not that he did. how much do you want to spend? if you are buying one new then there are other guns that you can get for the same price that are better like a used ion. look around and look at the specs.

I second the Spyder

Hard working, free mods to make them perform better, cheap parts

I would recommend an SP1 or SP vibe. Good solid markers that are electronic and have clamping feednecks

why are you guys telling him he should get a different gun? the 98 is an excellent gun, and has been for over a decade. it's also perfect for a beginner as it is well known so help will be easy to find, it's also a relatively simple as far as the mechanics go and anyone can figure out how it works and how to clean it and all. it's a very reliable gun on top of that, and the upgrades available to it can make it match most any marker out there in a woodsball game so i don't know why people keep saying "keep it stock, don't waste money upgrading it"...it's been teh most well known name in paintball forever for a reason...98 with e-grip or response trigger and a cyclone feed with good barrel can drop bodies all day in the right hands.

so you guys can take yer thousand dollar guns and shove em right up yer pompous ... ok, i'm getting carried away now, but i'm right

there are many, many reasons that there are better starting markers than a tippman. You, however, seem stuck in the ways so I'm not even going to bother dignifying you with a proper response.

fire with fire..

well... The Tippman is the rental gun at the paintball place where I go...So...Usually rental guns are supposed to be bad or worst than a players own gun... But in this case they would be the same... so I would not suggest it... Like some of the others I would suggest Spyder Guns but... That is just me...

lol, i'm not stuck on the 98 custom...i don't even have a 98 custom, i used to have a spyder, and i've used ions before, among other brands. i don't claim to be the paintball guru, i just think you guys talk down to these poor beginners and act like they've made a mistake when they made a fine decision.

you're not going to bother dignifying me with a proper response as to why other guns would be more advantageous to a beginner? well that response was elementary at best...so go ahead oh lord of paintball, enlighten me...tell me why the tippmann was a bad choice?

spyder makes some great guns, i'll never say otherwise.

tippmanns are generally the rental gun at parks...but not because they are cheap...but because they are the most well known gun, they are also very durable and easy to fix, making them excellent candidates for a rental...a paint ball park doesn't want people leaving with a negative experience from a crappy gun...the park wants people to come back again and again and therefore will offer the best that they can within reason

So telling them that there is something out there that performs similerly, if not better than the 98c to try and help people make their own informed choices is now considered being an asshole?

I changed my mind.

You wanna get a cyclone hopper and an e trigger for it? That'll be $200 please.
Instead, you can get a stock spyder or SP1, or vibe, They cost around $200 brand new. they come standard with an electronic frame, they're small lighter, and cheaper if you want a tippman equivalent.

hardly. you can win a game with anything if you know what youre' doing. This discussion is about the value of products, not "this will make you play better."

no, that quote is what you should do...but those words are quite a twist of the reality i'm speaking about.
your quote is very different from "don't waste your money upgrading a 98"
and other comments i've recently seen in similar threads...i simply chose this one to announce my feelings as it is the most recent.

ridiculous, immature statement...perhaps bone stock...a lot of other guns are more accurate out of the box...but a decent barrel on a tippmann makes it very accurate imo. as far as bps is concerned...this isn't speedball we're talking about,we're talking about a woodsball gun...you want 50 balls per second firing out to make up for bad aim...then a faster gun is for you...but i personally think the e-grips and response triggers make for plenty bps...there is more to shooting then "spray and pray".

like i said in my previous post...the parks want good guns for their patrons so they return...not garbage, it's a business...calling it a poor gun simply because it was the company's choice is plain stupid.

they use tippmans because they're idiot proof and are durable. I'm not saying they're bad markers, I'm saying there's better value items out there.

I think what we have here is another woodsballer that thinks anyone using a marker with batteries is just a lame speedballer that doesn't understand the subtle game of woodsball.

I have nothing bad to say about the 98C it is a tough and reliable marker with a proven track record. However Tippmann has been left behind in the entry level market. For an extra $50 the SP1 shoots faster stock, has less "kick", runs on CO2, has a lighter trigger pull, and has a low force bolt to prevent chopping. In roughly the same price range you can also find a ton of other markers with a more advanced design than the outdated 98c.

You write off the suggestion of electronic markers spouting off about how 50bps is just spray and praying. You do realize that tourneys have caps and that speedball players are actually shooting slower than woodsball guys with upgraded Tippmanns? With a bit of money any A5 or 98C can easily hit 18+bps while tournament rules now limit rates of fire to just under 12bps.

There is more to "speedball" markers than speed there is also lighter weight, more shot to shot consistency (for accuracy), air efficiency and smoother shooting any of which would be welcomed by woods or scenario players and if those markers can also shoot 1bps as easily as it can 18bps that is nothing to complain about.

just because Its a rental gun doesn't mean it is crap gun the only reason it is a rental gun is because the gun is reliable and the fields don't want to buy a new gun every time a noob trashes it. And the biggest reason people are worse with rental guns is because they are used to their gun or not used to paintball as a sport in general.

did you read anything we just said?
man, I'm so sick of tippman fanboys waltzing in and spouting of the exact same thing without recognizing anything but the tippman marker.

and, i dont think the field forgets to factor in how cheap (price and composition) the tippmann markers are. mostly the newer ones, but it applies to all.

i mean, theyre not gonna buy Minis or PMRs.
